Struggling with a choice here

Room is right at 6000cuft(kitchen dinning room and living room combined).

Struggling with the choice of the SVS PB13 Ultra or the ULS 15 from HSU. I've always owned HSU subs(different models), and they have served me well. Right now I have the HO w/Turbo and a MBM.

I am a bass junkie, and this will be for 100% movies. Also, I can add a second unit later on if needed. Is there something else that would better be suited? I don't mind spending the money for something that I'm going to be completely happy with. ED? SVS? HSU? I'm lost with all of these choices

100% movies? 100% SVS PB13, maybe even 2 for that big room. The HSU is not designed for large rooms and movies.

I would agree with that. I doubt the ULS would even match the output of your HO. If you really want the ULS, consider at least a pair. How well does the HO satisfy your output needs? The PB13 will handily exceed the HO.

The HO is a good sub, and fits my needs very well! But with the Turbo, it is UGLY! Sorry HSU SVS would be a huge improvement for looks factor, and improve sound quality

Eventually, I want to add a second one into the mix(SVS or ULS), and have twins But for now, funds are only avaliable for one.

Question, if I do go with the SVS, should I keep the MBM? Or will the SVS outperform on it's own?

Thanks!

The PB13 has a very flat and extended frequency response on it's own with plenty of midbass punch when called for, but it's hard to say whether you may still benefit from the MBM due to the acoustic characteristics in your room. If you went with the PB13, I'd hang on the MBM and try it both with and without.

Thank you sir! Good advice.

Any other sub recomendations out there, or is the SVS the cream of the crop?

third choice dual MFWs
for the price of either the svs or the hsu you can do two mfws and then when your money's right again you can buy two more

True, the MFW pair is another excellent choice. Also if you can handle the size, an Epik Conquest is a real powerhouse.

Size is not an issue....well to a point

How would you rate the Conquest to the PB13-Ultra?

Craigsub listed the Conquest ahead of the PB13 with the PB13 on par with the Epik Castle/Tower and dual MFW 15s.

I think the general consensus is, he probably needs 2 subs here. Therefore I recommend the MFWs. 2 of them should do it.

No animals were harmed in the creation of this sentence.

I have no doubt that a Conquest will be more powerful than a PB13 Ultra. Bigger driver, bigger amp, bigger enclosure, more port area = more bass. The Ultra may sound a bit better (don't know I've heard neither). Ultra is smaller, looks better, is more flexible, with more features.

Conquest + MBM could be a very tasty set-up.

You have been all over the forums with the same questions. Go to http://www.epiksubwoofers.com/C2.pdf for Tom Nousaine's review of the Conquest. Also, Mia & Lana's dad has posted the differences between the Conquest and the ULS-15 at http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...highlight=10hz. You just have to sift through the thread to find the info. For your room and mine (being the same size) the Conquest and MBM-12 would be the way to go.

Hey, we all have been there! Laying out some $$$$ and then finding out you made a mistake will make anyone gun shy. But really, I would go with the Conquest if I could afford it right now but I have all my subs HSU. What I have is Ok for now, it is only that I want more on the bottom end and the Conquest or a DIY is the way to go.

I agree. Just talked to Epik, and they have a very good sales pitch Only downside is the 3-4 week wait

I've never actually heard a Conquest, but I think Ricci summed it up nicely. It will no doubt have greater output than the 13Ultra, but which actually sounds better, it's hard to say. The Ultra has a good deal more flexibilty with it's variable tunings, eq, and room compensation control. A pair of PB13's would certainly be a sweet setup.

As a single sub solution for your large space, the Conquest is probably the way to go. The Ultra would be an improvement and out of the box, I believe will sound better than the Conquest. This isn't a knock on the Conquest. I've exchanged a bunch of emails with rossandwendy who has both a pair of U13s and a Conquest, as well as others with just the Conquest. It's got the ability to sound equally good, but is so powerful, it's harder to tame. Ross tried a SMS, BFD and finally an Antimode along with traps to get the beast to shine. Finally, he feels it's the better solution...maybe...he's pretty anal . It wasn't just about output, the Conquest has that in spades, it was about SQ and midbass. Also, it was never about movies, but music.

You might not have any of the same problems in your space since it has room to breathe.

I don't lurk as much as I used to and I NEVER listen. Comes from being old and cynical.

If you're within driving distance, I will let you borrow two ULS-15's and the Conquest. If I had ultra 13's I would let you borrow those too.

Don't suffer too much angst. None of the choices you are considering can really be bad, therefore you can't really make a big mistake with any of them. They're all going to sound good. Go with the sub or subs with the form, size, appearence, and features you prefer.

nothing planned, the system is partially running. I have one ULS-15 out on loan at the moment and the Conquest is not connected. I haven't tweaked in quite some time just trying to observe the current configuration primarily from a subjective sound quality perspective. I didn't think timbre matching would also be critical and apply to subs as well.
