i'm curious what folks have as subs to go with ascend speakers.

please let me know what you have and what you think of it.

i've heard reccomendations for hsu, svs, but not much else.

why are those mostly reccomended?

hsu and svs are recommended a lot because there's many people who have them and they are a bit of a "cult"... that's not meant in a "bad" way, just the way it is...

i have sierra's all the way around in a 5.1 setup. my sub is a paradigm servo15 v2. i'm very pleased with it (it predates the sierra's though, it wasn't bought specifically for them). shakes the house when necessary for movies, and exceptional for music.

ymmv.

i have ascend 340se in the front with the 200's as surrounds in a 7 channel set-up. i am running 2 epik towers.
is quite a impressive set-up in sealed 2400 cu. ft. room.
total immersion= scary.
before i got the epik towers, i was running twin a2-300s from E.D. with the ascends

really depends on your price range.

i have sierra-1 lcr with 170se for surrounds.

i would of bought a sub from ascend but they are in development.

i ended up getting two mfw-15 from av123 for 1250 shipped.

The mfw-15 is a good sounding sub.

Some other good products many people on here reccommend are the svs, hsu, epik, and ed.

If price does not matter you can go with JL audio or Velodyne.

You need to be more specific as to your criteria for purchasing a subwoofer.

I would also suggest Rythmik subs. I currently have a sealed Rythmik 15" in my system (Sierras and 170SE's) and think it is, in the very least, one of the best subs I have heard....in or out of my system.

It was an assembled kit.

I have had various Hsus and SVS's for the most part as far as long term listening goes.

The Rythmik can not compete are pure output, but in sound quality, it is no contest.

So the Rythmik sub sounds better then the Hsu 3.3. How close was the output for HT? That much difference in SQ. I just saw those kits before your post. They looks like good deals.

Because this is an online forum and those are well-established ID subwoofer brands. Just a side effect of the online culture. Not that that is a bad thing, necessarily. But it goes with the territory. Many of the participants in these forums own or have owned those brands.

I don't know if anyone has said it, but other than assuring that a subwoofer can reach as high as your speakers' low-end capability, you don't really match a subwoofer to speakers.

Yes, I do think it sounds better than my 3.3. I have not watched many movies with it, just a WOTW clip, and I don't think it is missing much if any, but my room is only 14x18x9. I am hoping to compare it with a ULS-15 and F112 soon.

That would be fun.

I am a bit different than some when it comes to subwoofers. I don't care as much for "how loud does it get?". If the subwoofer can play fine in my listening range, that is all that I need. Sound quality comes first.

^ I agree. If it's loud enough in your preferred listening range that's enough. Who can listen to 100db continuous?
I just don't want it to bottom out on the peak in HT

I have 170 Classics and 200's for surrounds with an older SVS PB10 in a 1700 cu ft room. Sounds great but not enough output/extension. Currently trying to decide between a pair of MFW-15's and a pair of Epik Knights to replace the SVS.

Not enough for a 1700 cu ft room? You must like your stuff real loud.

a thought ran through my head. i was contemplating this a lot because the ascend sub is not out yet. i don't want to wait around for it. so in the mean time i think i'm going to get the 5.0 system and custom make the subs in a end table type enclosure and when the ascend sub comes out i can always pick that up having not wasted my money (as in MORE money) then just throwing the home built one together.

thoughts?

Granted the Ascend sub probably will be a good one there are many subs out there now that are good. It would be co$t effective now and get one and not worry about the Ascend sub. Spending money just to get rid of the sub is wasted $$ IME. Subs don't need to match your speakers. What's you budget in mind?

trying to stay around 500 bucks, because if i bought an existing product it would be between 600-700 dollars.

i kind of like the idea of building my own sub anyhow. will help it blend into the room, we need end tables, etc.

my priorities would be sound quality 1, price 2 (or i wouldn't be doing it myself), size it will take up 3. in building it myself i can arrange the size to fit my needs.

from the treads i have been looking over i need a 15" really (the room is about 2300 cu ft), unless i want to do 2 12"s. thinking about going with a sealed box for accuracy.

my research right now is wondering if direct servo of something like this is worth it...

http://www.rythmikaudio.com/DS15.html

thoughts? i know i could go a lot cheaper then that but i don't think it would be as accurate. but do i realy need direct servo?

would 350w be enough power to fill that kind of space with a sealed enclosure?

for $500 shipped i would get the eD A3-300 with the upgraded driver
