Not sure I would consider a PC13-Ultra "humble" - that's a pretty nice subwoofer.

If you take yourself too seriously, expect me to do the exact opposite

Thanks. It's a monster to my guests: "WTF is that thing?" but considering that there's folks here with 10+ subs, it's quite humble.

My system, the picture is a bit dark and yes, the left sub is in a windowed corner, it sounds tighter there, all but one corner has a window or has no wall at all and the wife would kill me if I put it there so we put them were we can get away with.

The KT-DS speakers were a stupid idea, they are going away in favor of Klipsch RP-160M's.

Every time I pass by these beauties I have to stop and admire them. They are literally works of art. Particularly love the retro grill Nathan built for these subs. Beautiful looks and sound to match. The finish is curly walnut with high gloss. The grills are 2 part grills, the outer part is solid walnut and the inner part is removable in case the cloth needs to be replaced. I chose a vintage style guitar amp cloth for the grills. What I find amazing is how compact those subs are.

I've not found that to be true. In all your experience testing different subwoofers - is there any truth to size vs. accuracy? They don't get much bigger than 21" inch in non custom equipment. To your ears do the 21" subs seem just as musical and "speedy" as a smaller sub?

If you can find the Dan Wiggins white paper on the topic, it's good stuff.

Woofer "speed", is a function of what you're tasking it to do.
Consider the simple physics; making bass is all about air displacement,.ie small fan spinning fast=big fan spinning slow.

Theoretically;
A 15" driver being fed a 20hz tone, to hit 100db@1m
A 21" driver being fed a 20hz tone, to hit 100db@1m

The 21" driver, pumps easily back and forth, twenty times a second.
The 15" driver, pumps hurriedly back and forth, twenty times a second, because it has only half the cone size, and must stroke twice as far to displace the same amount of air. Since the smaller 15" driver has twice the excursion, yet it must maintain it's frequency of twenty outward peaks per second, it must travel at a much faster rate. Thus starting and stopping all that mass at high speed, there is opportunities for overshoot distortions, as the center of the magnetic gap is oftentimes the most linear part. Encountering the farthest most reaches of the magnetic gap is where a variety of non-linearities occur.

Similarly, if you double your system displacement capability, you're halving each element of the system's work load. Upgrading from one sub, to two like subs, you're halving each components workload.....and slowing down each driver's "speed",.. at any given SPL.

I hope I didn't muddy things up further

Good luck

For those who are OCD and like the dual sub configuration ( myself included) this may bother ya Five or six months till I can afford the next sub- however! I'm a 90% music listener so you don't see a huge TV or anything else besides an AVR and speakers and sub! I just got my new speakers in today. I have tried about 4 or 5 pairs of new speakers in the last two months and settled on these Klipsch reference premier speakers. I think they sound pretty good, are efficient, and blend in well with my sub. On a wooden floor underneath a huge basement crawlspace, this system really gets the floor and couches vibrating! Well after much deliberation, I decided to move my sub and speakers back downstairs. The dilemma: downstairs is a 1900 cu ft room with concrete slab but 1 opening for a small set of stairs and upstairs is a 3000 cu ft room that opens to bedroom, kitchen etc. but lies on wooden floor with basement underneath. I just had to try the system in both spots before I felt settled. It's my first real system so what the heck, experiment. That's half the fun, right?! Needless to say, I think the smaller room with concrete floor trumps the wooden floor bigger room, although the tactile sensation is neat!
Question though: In one of the pictures that I posted, I show my side wall and it's a 4 inch ledge and it is all concrete block below and drywall above. How will this generally effect the bass with approximately half the side wall being concrete block and drywall on the top half ? I'd assume it would be beneficial for less vibrations. All this has my acoustic head banging against the wall. Now I want a treated room, floor, etc. Inhave a feeling I'm just getting started. Click image for larger version
