Here are some pics of my two off-the-peg subs , which are M-Design Bellas
. I use them as "broadband" (in Dr. Geddes' terminology) subs to smooth out room response. I bought them because I liked the looks, and because their drivers are by Aura with their excellent underhung neo-radial motor.
Sub #1, on the wall next to my left speaker. The wall angles away at the end of the cabinet, into a hallway.
Same sub, no grille. It looks better with the grille. Note the signature pointy dustcap on the driver. I will be plugging that port, because I'm more concerned about using these to smooth response from 40-160Hz than in achieving ultimate extension. (Ultimate extension is what the big, corner-loaded 33mm x-max 18 powered by a 2kW amp is for!)
Sub #2 in position, with furball in the bottom left corner. Driver is about 42" from the wall behind it.
Of course, being the incorrigible geek that I am, I had to take one apart before setting them up or even listening to them at all beyond a quick check to see that they work! Here's the driver, an Aura NS12-794-4A
as I expected. The trim ring is either sheet metal or aluminum, and is actually riveted or screwed onto the basket. (I did not attempt to remove it.)
I just got these, and haven't had time to refine placement, or even to listen to them at all beyond a quick once-over with an iPod and a y-cable to make sure they function. Measurements of the complete system will surely follow soon, as I complete that process.
I don't have a pic of my main subwoofer, but it's not germane to this forum anyway. Besides, it is not nearly as pretty: just a corner-loaded Exodus Audio Maelstrom-X
in a 100L sealed cube by eD in their Odye finish, powered by a Crown XTi2000.
