Mix Master Ice, I see you over at slickdeals, thanks for your time and insight over there.

Have you looked at the Pioneer SW-8MK2 Andrew Jones Designed 100-Watt Powered Subwoofer ? It's only 8 inches, but if your room is
not huge, it will probably do the trick. I have the F12 for living room tv viewing only, and an SVS PB-12Plus for home theater room. I picked
up the Pioneer for my office 2.1 set-up for music only and it does a great job. My office is about 12 x 10 with 8 foot ceilings. Pioneer makes this
sub in an Elite 10 inch, but it's $600.00. If you're at that price, you could do way better. But for $144.00 for the 8 incher, it's a great preformer
and a great price. FYI, I got the Pioneer a month ago for $126.00

8 inch http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Where is it $189 with free shipping?

You can save a dollar or two at Provantage or NextWarehouse. Also, maybe you could "Make an Offer" to AcousticSoundDesign on eBay. They currently have the price there wrong, but it was 195$ recently.

If you are waiting on the F12 to drop in price it may not happen for a while. It seems to be settled in pretty well at around $200. The F12 is a solid sub, no doubt, but I actually preferred the Bic V-1220 a little better. Had a bit more punch and low end in my set up. I have the 10" V-1020 right now and it seems to be extremely close in output and extension to the 12" V-1220. And yes, I'm over at slickdeals often.....always looking for that super deal on something I really don't need.

Surprisingly, Walmart had it for $189 with free shipping. Also, found it for $189 through Sears which was pulling from Buy.com.

I saw provantage and nextwarehouse, but the shipping for both killed it when I considered I had not used them, let alone even seen them as etailers before.

Via Walmart, I purchase with Walmart's 90-day refund and no restock fee...

I'll get this thing next Tuesday.

Just waiting for my set of andrew jones sp-bs41s to show and that set will be complete with two towers, four surrounds (1 pr -21s and 1 pair 41s) and the matching center.

All told:
Refurb'd Denon x1100w avr - $250;
1st gen AJ from newegg for $309 (all seven speakers); and
Bic F12 for $189.

Not bad for what was a $500 work bonus + returning a couple of items that I wanted but decided to return to make way for this set up. Hope I'm happy and hope this fired up by next Wednesday.

Provantage and NextWarehouse end up at around $187-188 shipped. They both have quite a few reviews on Google's product search, big most of them positive.

Provantage partially replied to a presale question I emailed them, but didn't reply the followup, so bad impression.

NextWarehouse initially seemed like they weren't going to answer at all, but after a few days got back with a good reply. Maybe took them a while to research what I asked about. A quick "we'll check and let you know" would've helped, but overall better impression.

I was set on the F12 but I broke down and got an SVS PB-2000. The wife gave her blessing so I went for it. I'll probably pay for it later but whatever. Maybe I won't be able to hear her yelling over the bass when I'm watching Tron!

Well, it appears that the PB-2000 reaches lower, with more than three times the power of the F12, so it should be better. For $800 one would expect it to be better. Congrats on your new acquisition.

I've had both of these subs and the PB-2000 is far and away a better sub. Your wife may retract her "blessing" once you get it properly situated and calibrated. In all but rather large rooms, it should perform well. The Tron reboot really pissed off my wife.

For an F12 alternative, isn't the SB1000 a more sensible choice?

The ported PB-2000 is a lot better than the sealed SB1000.

Yeah.

For ~2.5x the cost.

Apples and oranges, folks. Though I also followed the "get the most you can afford" credo and probably have better quality LFE from my Hsu, it is most def a big black elephant in the room. The BIC and NXG alternatives surely perform better in the WAF tests.

Modest "theater": Samsung UN40ES6150, Panasonic BDT210, Yamaha RXV775. Bose 401 mains, 301 Series III surrounds, Yamaha NS-C444 center, Hsu VTF-2 Mk4.

As far as bang for the buck the F12 is probably better than the pb2000. After all it goes boom boom for less than $200.
But if you want audiophile grade bass there's no comparison. The F12 isn't even in the same league as the pb2000.

No sub @ $200-$400 is gonna be in the same league as the $800-$1000 subs. The F12 is one of the best if not THE best option at $200. If you have a higher budget, you are in the wrong thread. That said, if you are willing to spend $800 on a sub, you should check out the DIY threads. One can build a sub that will slay the PB-2000 for a lot less money. Build two for double the "slayage".

This is my first HT setup. I might look into DIY for my next rig. Wife and I may be moving in a few years. I'm sure by then I will get the urge to upgrade everything then maybe I can build something.

Wife just ordered the BIC F12 for my birthday (I think she forgot that I get all the Amazon emails) Anyways, From what I have read there is a switch on the back for to either have the Sub amp control cutoff or the receiver? I guess its the Dolby VS Digital Switch. Is that correct?

The switch is the power switch. It is on, off or auto. Auto means that the sub well turn off and stay off until it receives a signal. Level and low pass filter are controlled with knobs.

Yes. Either Pro Logic (the sub controls the Low pass) or Digital (the receiver controls the Low pass). Let the receiver do it if it can.

Just had a look at your basement thread. Nice work. Since, you won't be doing much building down there during the summer, you should read up on designing and building your own subs in the DIY subwoofer forums. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-diy-speakers-subs/

With subwoofers, location is everything, but you might luck out and be able to use that space under the stairs. In the meantime, you can use the F12 to find the best sub locations, and even use it to fill in for the subs you build.

Can you elaborate on why this switch is there?

I am amazed how I missed this switch on my F12. I didn't even see it or know it was there. It's right by the power cord, maybe that's how I missed it.

It was on "Pro Logic Receiver" I switched it to "Digital Receiver". Will have to see now if I notice any difference in sound.

Switching to "Digital Receiver" or "Dolby Digital" should defeat/disable the sub's internal LPF/xover.

Check the manual.

Basically PLR for 2.0 channel receiver. DR for 5.1. If you have an AVR with bass management leave it on DR and turn the crossover all the way up.

Just checked and it says "Digital 5.1/7.1 Receiver" or "ProLogic Receiver"
That should clear some of the confusion.

Thank you sirs!

I was actually also wondering yesterday when I was looking at the back of the sub, what is a good distance from the port to the wall? Mine is about 8" from the wall.

Does this affect the sound quality? Or is it dangerous in any way to the sub for the port to be too close to a wall/object?

^This.

Older receivers (Pro Logic Receiver) do not have Bass Management, and you would use the crossover knob to adjust your High Pass on the sub (usually 80 Hz). With newer receivers (Digital Receiver), the receiver has software (Audyssey or similar) to adjust it.
