hey guys im new to this forum. i have an acoutech pl-200 i was wondering why my sub is a bronze type of color? is it because i didnt pay the full price they didnt want to send me the platinum version.
Im pretty impressed with the sub with movies, it shakes everything very easily, but with music im not really too impressed.. its like when i try to turn up the volume it bottoms out rather quickly. i like to listen to music pretty loud sometimes, probably much louder than most people, and my speakers definitely take control with the volume 75% up.
Its like with the sub it stops getting louder around 65% and when i turn it down to around 45% the sub is pretty quiet for a good 15 seconds and then starts to play the volume it should.
am i just expecting too much from this sub? I have used my jl w6 in my house with an amp from an onkyo sub rated around 100 watts at 8 ohms and it seemed to be louder.. but the box also was slightly bigger than this one.

the sub is wonderful for movies though. playing test tones it moves some air at 15 hz and starts to shake things around 18 hz
and around 50 hz up it starts to get quieter, which is fine, my speakers play down to 50 hz pretty well
im wondering if i shouldve just spent the extra money to get an hsu stf-1 but i just cant see an 8'' driver in a smaller box with a 150 watt amp getting louder than the pl-200

After reading pretty much all I can about all kinds of subs, I have decided to go with the HSU stf-1.
(need to sell my current Onix x-sub before I can do that). With music, loudness is not all - it's about how "fast" and accurate the sub is, and from what I can see, the stf-1 is a giant killer in that dept.

Sounds like your room is playing havoc with bass. I never had the sub 'bottom out' with one of the most intense movie scenes (Flight of the Phoenix being super intense in the crash scene). Maybe you need a sub designed to be tuned to 40hz or greater to get that 'loud quick bass.' Maybe just get mains that have 8" or greater size for woofers so you can get a fuller sense of 'loud quick bass.' Dunno.

Of course it would be with a smaller driver in a sealed box. Sounds like for music you made the right choice, it's what I would have gone with if I wanted music over HT.

I'm wondering if the stf-1 is strong enough for a medium size room? I like the HSU subs, but that's $100 more for the stf-2..

yeah my room is mid-sized, too, but my x-sub handled it prettyy ok, and I think the stf-1 can easily do what the x-sub does, if not more...
The reviews have convinced me of that, heck it even beat subs that are 3x its price...
(my change is mainly due to cosmetic issues...and upgraditis, kinda)

You can tell if the subwoofer is blown if most of the sound that comes out of it sounds muffled and make more of a belching sound rather then the tight bass it is supposed to sound like.
You can also inspect the woofer to see if there is any separation on any part of the woofer, especially on the rubber seal. If you can't see anything there, You can remove the woofer and see if the cone itself is damaged.

This sub is designed to get loud, but as you played it at max volume the moment you got it, it is very likely that you could have blown it out. I will say that I have played my H-100 at only 12 o'clock and it got so loud at times that it worried me if the drive could handle it.

I hope for your sake that you got lucky and didn't blow your driver. I honestly would never suggest running any audio equipment at it's absolute maximum at any time.

Sam1234,
One way to think about audio, it's volume and how high to run it is to use an analogue to performance cars. For example, you can buy a Ferrari and it is made to go fast, really fast in fact. But even though it can go 200+ MPH does not mean that you want to run it at or beyond that and have it red line for anything more then a few moments. Doing so would ruin the engine and it will burn it's self out.

Same thing goes for all audio equipment. They may be designed to go real loud and may even play at max volume for a short time, but the drivers will eventually wear out and quickly too when played at extreme volumes.

I noticed that when the sub is on the floor the sound gets louder towards the bottom of the room but if I were to place it on a stand to raise it about 1.5 feet off the floor then it gets louder when im sitting on the sofa.I will try to post some pics of the room so you can get a better idea of what im refering to.

i got mine but the rubber seal is quite rough. it's not even round near the screw. It seems they just can't pay enough for the experienced and patient worker to do the job. Anyone know how to redo the seal by myself?

What do you mean? If it's not right, get it replaced, don't try to fix it yourself and ruin it and void the warranty.

Sam my man, some music notes go really low and maybe they go below the subs 22hz level. Maybe this is what you're experiencing???

I only use mine for Home Theater use so I can't be much help on the music end.

I'm going to venture to say that most music doesn't go as low as 22hz. Set the sub crossover at 120hz. This will allow upper bass frequencies to pass to the sub.

Won't that also allow voice to pass to the sub? Which I don't suppose is such a tragedy with music as it would be with HT.

Yes, indeed, the driver is really ugly finished. My was decentered. I mean the rubber surrounding was couple milimeters off to the one side. When I was pressing cone, there was a noise from the voice coil rubbing to the magnet structure. I was thinking to get another brand woofer (titanic from parts express), but hey!... we are talking $150-250!, tuning the port and other fitting problems. So... I decided to take flat screwdriver, removed half of the rubber, then glued back with contact cement... and booom is perfect now! I also added some glue to dust cup, which was trembling against cone around 30Hz... Total 20 min of my work.
