Well, I'm wondering what's more prone to distortion? Turning levels up on the receiver, or turning gain up on the sub? That's what I'm trying to discern.

Just best-offered $255 on ebay and got a response of $269 Buy-It-Now for the BIC PL-200.

The BIC PL-200 will be integrated into modest home theater in a tiny NYC studio apartment of about 230 sq ft., replacing my recently broken SONY SA-WM40 sub. My HT consists of Wharfedale Emerald 95 mains, Wharfedale ? center, radioshack RCA ProLX-55 rears (Linaeaum ribbon tweeters), and an old Yamaha HTR-5240 receiver.

EDIT: I CHANGED MY MIND and went with the Emotiva Sub:10 (10" sealed) for $289 shipped via their website. General consensus is that it is normally a solid contender in the $300 to $500 range, and an excellent value at this $289 sale price. Testimony shows it goes AS LOW or MARGINALLY LOWER than the PL-200, and generally gives you more of that kick in the chest than the PL-200 during movies. Since my listening habits are 70/30 Movies/Music, I went with the more "musical" sealed Emotiva sub for its accuracy in my very small apartment, where I feel the greater "output" of the ported PL-200 is a null point. If I were in a space triple in size then the ported sub may make more sense. Besides... a lot of music is played during movies, right? So what gives?

I have a new Pioneer VSX-1120-K AVR, and I'm ordering a PL-200 this week to go with it.

Is this the only cable I'll need?

I am debating the PL-200, perhaps as a pair, compared to a VTF-2 MK 3. The pair would actually be cheaper shipped than the HSU (walnut, on sale) and have double the drivers and wattage. I'm not a make-you-ears bleed guy, and my living room is not large-- under 2000ft^3. But I love when I "feel" bass. And I'm coming from a Cerwin Vega 12" 150W that by its specs only extended to 32hz, so I know I'm missing notes on certain songs & movies.

Which setup is likely to serve me better for tv, netflix, and music, and which would go lower? Would even one PL-200 be a big upgrade from my CV?

(Other equip- Onkyo 707 ordered, JBL S38x4 + center)

This is a no contest IMO. The HSU will have cleaner more precise bass and can go lower than the PL-200.
Enough said.

Well, I just bit and ordered the PL-200 from Sound Distributors. Gonna be putting it in a 10x27x7 foot dedicated HT room in the basement when I eventually finish it. (Until then, It will sit in my living room with my Ancient Toshiba 61 4:3 rear projection tv.) I'd been using a crappy garbage KLH sub that I bought like 10 years ago, but disconnected because it was horrible, and had just used my speakers to generate bass (RTR1530s, which do ok, but don't really go that deep.) Can't wait!!!! Gotta hang a ceiling, paint, build a riser, build a table/bar, and put some indoor/outdoor carpet down (basement floods once or twice per year) ... then I'll be ready to get my projector and set everything up ... (Rewiring is done, new lighting installed, drywall is 2 coats mudded, pretty much starting to feel like real progress has been made!) Eventually I'll post some pictures ... in the Dedicated HTroom thread, but it'll be much more modest and simple than some....

Mine should be here next week. Given my room's layout, I only have two places the sub can be placed, so I hope one of those two locations is close to my sweetspot. Wish me luck!

Just venting here, but I'm really PO'd with myself. I was moving my sub today, and by accident bumped a Swiss ornamental cowbell that was hanging on the wall. As a result, it fell and landed on the sub. Put a nice semi-circular gouge in that glossy black finish... looks almost like bite marks. I did the best I could with some black touch up paint, and fortunately it's not too noticeable but man, the sub is only 2 weeks old!!

Oh well... got that out of the way. Now I don't have to worry so much about my kids running into it.

True, but probably more trouble than it's worth. For a good job, I'd have to sand everything down and pretty much start from scratch. It could be an interesting project however when I have more time.

Chalk up another for a PL-200. I needed to replace my KEF PSW2150 that died on me (poor thing), and looking at the specs, this should actually do a little bit better.

It Is a powered sub, so It won't be drawing any power from your Elite SC-27

Crossed over at 80hz on the sub's dial, volume dial set to ~45%, receiver set to +0.00db.

@palehorse That's a great starting point.
I was told by sound distributors to keep the gain at about 50% the crossover at 85% and the db level of course depends on the room size and receiver..I have mine on -8db but I have dual Pl-200's so I get a little more db!

I bumped the volume to 50%, but wouldn't it be best to leave my sub's crossover at 80hz since my fronts (Polk Monitor 70s and CS2B) are crossed at 80, or is a little overlap a better idea?

My AVR is the new Pio 1120 btw.

In theory the crossover should be fine where it is since the lower -3dB limits for the Monitor 70 and CS2 are 40 Hz and 60 Hz, respectively. That should be sufficient overlap. Now having said that, a little experimenting with different crossover frequencies can't hurt since in the end it's how the set-up sounds to you that really counts.

I'll mess with it a bit and see where I end up. Thanks for the info!

Quick question: Will placing a potted plant on top of the subwoofer have any negative impact on its performance?

If that's what it will take to make the wife/girlfriend happy then the answer is that it's absolutely OK to put a potted plant on it.

Hi J, did you run MCACC auto setup? If so what did the receiver set the Subwoofer Channel Level to?

Run auto setup, set all speakers to Small and raise the crossovers up to 80hz (if set below by the 819h) and leave any set above 80hz at the level set by the 819h. Also check what the subwoofer channel level is.
