Mark illuminates further:

A pair of Terraform XLs will significantly outperform 4x SubMersives in real world performance all else being equal (location) - more than 2x the deep bass capability without loosing anything tangible in the upper octave. The Terraform XL has more equal capability over the range. The headroom and efficiency above 35-45Hz in a SubMersive basically allows it to still use the majority of it's 1000W amplifier for the deep stuff even in complex/busy movie scenes. With the Terraform XL, we're basically bringing that sort of efficiency down into the lower octave while also having all the other benefits of the very low audible distortion of the Terraform design. If you want to SPL race at 50-80Hz with a sine wave or burst, you might loose a couple dB. That's not how you use a system though. Mind you, a SubMersive is ridiculously powerful above 40hz, only a little shy of the huge Genelec HTS6. 2 SubMersives have similar output capability above 45hz as a JTR Growler (pro audio bass horn optimized for above 40-45Hz), but still has the deep extension and we broke things in Zamboniman's home with a single Growler.

Can't wait to hear what 4 of those XL's in Fugueness's HT will do, might have to rebuild the house after....

4, I thought Fugueness was getting two and using them instead of the 4 submersives. 4XL's would be way over the top me thinks. That might even be enough for an IMAX theater

Yes, starting with 2, but I have room for 4 more! First I will run the 2 XL's in conjunction with the 4 Submersives and see how that handles.

Yes, Catalyst surrounds should take things up another notch.

Why stop at 7.4? Try 7.7!

No. I'm just a fan of Mark's products and his goals in his designs. Same goes for Jeff P. from JTR and Tom Danley. I will be using their products in the near future. Just trying to tie up some personal issues first. Why do you ask?

From Mark Seaton:

"While there's been plenty of discussion of the Terraform XL product in Johnsteph10's thread, I thought with the production version of the Terraform XL out in the build area, it was time for a dedicated Terraform XL thread.

Note the version for Johnsteph10 was custom built to fit his specific installation, but is the identical internal volumes and tuning, having the same performance. I intend to attempt keeping 1-2 Terraform XL enclosures as shown below in house ready for loading, but it is possible to do custom versions where one dimension is traded for another for some additional cost. The monster you see here is 22.5" x 54" x 28" deep (yes, I look even shorter than usual here):

I am awaiting the new amplifiers to finish these up, but testing thus far has been quite impressive with just how clean and powerful the 11-20Hz output is, with plenty of thanks to the PR loaded bandpass design and 3" radius flares on those huge ports.

More to be added later.."

Also, Mark has mentioned the new custom amps are ready....and even better than originally planned! I'll check in with him or let him comment on these new amps...

How fast will these roll off past the tuned frequency? I heard someone say they will put out 10-11hz in room response. It is my understanding that the PR designs roll off very quickly?

Is it possible to have them tuned lower ? or will mean a sacrifice in the upper end bass?

Speaking of which... I need two of these monster sized subs to match my column size... I know we've spoke of this (but its been a while) but how shallow and wide could these be if shaped like a column (up to 10 ft high).

Hope all is well!

I still suspect a shallow spot between the two front columns is the easiest route, as I believe it will be hard to get shallower than 14-16" in a custom fit Terraform XL (with side, not front exiting port). I'll give it some thought though. Do remember that in effect the bulk package has to remain close in total volume. In very rough figures, at say 15" depth, I suspect one example set of dimensions would be in the ballpark of 60" wide x 40" tall. At least any such option could later be very nicely tucked behind your screen/baffle wall if you ever did open it up again.

I am so afraid to take apart that baffle wall and screen. It's verry tight back there. I don't even know if I could get the B_DEAPS out if I had to at this point.. Ah! You never have enough space....

In terms of column size, could we do 24" wide (perhaps even 30" wide) and 18" depth and as high as you like?

I recall our conversations about using that space between the column and the screen but I worry about the esthetics.

I know this is not an ideal situation.

That's not a bad idea Jeff, and I have a few possibilities in mind. Let's take finer details to e-mail or on my own forum. I do have some ideas that should allow a depth of ~16" and width of 22-24" or even 18" with a little less width. A challenge is always welcome, and who knows, it might turn out rather useful to make it available for others as well.

I knew there was no quit in you!!!

I'll just call you in the next day or so when I can re-measure what dimensions would be the max I could go with... Thanks!

The good news is that the Terraform XL cabinet is so large it can be used as a coffin when you pass away.
