Jeff Permanian is incapable of hype or hyperbole and that is one of the things I admire about him. He tends to keep a low profile and so you won’t get many superlatives out of him regarding JTR products. That responsibility falls on those of us fortunate enough to own his high quality, high value products.

Yesterday, Jeff personally delivered the first two of his new Captivator subs to my HT. We spent the day working on an upgrade to my Triple 12LF’s and setting up and integrating the Captivators with my Danley TH-SPUDS. Last night we were able to run through some demo material and will be doing much more of that today during an HT meet I am hosting.

I was blown away by these subs. I have owned and heard a lot of subwoofers over the years and have enjoyed some aspect of all of them. I have never felt bass affects like I experienced last night with my new quad sub setup.

I hope that others will get an opportunity to hear the Captivators and post their comments as well, because it is unlikely we will be hearing much from Jeff about them.

Well done Jeff!!!

Couple of pics:

How’s this for intimidating front end?

Wow RMK! It certainly looks super there. I can't imagine "the feel" (SPL capability) your theater has now.

I've not heard the Captivator, however, I met Jeff at a local show and he had a few sets of Growlers running on different (outdoor)stages. They were incredible and shook the earth I stood on.

My visit got cut short due to an ill child and I did not get to return that evening but Jeff was a nice guy and stands behind a great product.

Nice Rob! Wish I could be at your meet today, but I have the kids and my brother (who is moving to Panama), is coming over to spend some time with us before he leaves!

Some day I would love to make it over to your place and hear that incredible looking system you have.

Have fun today!

No dust cap in that one. Pretty sure it's a JJ custom for Jeff. I really want to hear a captivator or two.

Looks GREAT Rob!

How much similarity is there between these and the Seaton Terraform? I believe the original captivator was a Terraform without the built-in amp. What amp(s) are you driving these with? Also, the Terraform has a 15" driver vs. the 12" driver in these Captivators. Are these smaller cabinets than the old Captivator/Terraform?

Was MS involved in the re-design?

I am told by both M&J that the Captivators and Terraforms are similar bandpass designs with the Captivator being a smaller form factor, 12" vs. 15" driver (both use an 18" PR) and un-powered. Yes, Mark was involved in the design of the Captivators.

I am powering the Captivators with a Crest Audio CC4000 pro amp. It can put out a clean 1300 watts to each Captivator and hopefully I will never need anywhere near that level of current (they are on a 20 amp circuit).

WOW! I wish I could have been there! Keith Yates AND Roger Dressler! Sounds like an HT Clinic instead of a GTG! Sounds like you guys had a terrific time!

Are you using the TH-Spuds with the Captivators? I noticed one of the attendees said he was sitting on a TH-Spud during M&C, but he didn't say if it was on.

Congrats and enjoy those babies!

Thanks Craig, indeed it was an Acoustics Clinic as Roger and Keith represent two of the best minds in the sound and acoustics fields. It was a real privilege to have them attend the G2G.

Yes, I have all four subs working for HT. Thus far I prefer just the Captivators alone for music. The under riser TH-SPUDS are my tactile transducers. I think Mark and Jeff are on to something with the bandpass design of the Captivator/Terraform. The "small" Captivator provides such clean output that I am really looking forward to hearing Peters dual Terraform XL’s.

The Captivator's specs are outdoor measurements, without room gain plus when you go from one to two subwoofers you gain 6db of output capability.

I'm using a Crest CC4000 for the Captivators. I have a Velo SMS-1 and Audyssey Pro running right now. I also have a QSC DSP 30 in the wings that I may or may not end up using.

After a conversation with Keith Yates, I am going to work on the room acoustics before I do any more EQing. Having a dedicated space gives me some flexibility in this regard and I would rather treat the disease than the symptom.
