It just occurred to me that I haven't run Audyssey since I toed-in my mains. With only two sitting positions, I think I'll make a tighter 1-6 grouping than Audyssey recommends. This is what rainy days were made for.

Thanks! We have very similar backgrounds and day jobs. And the first servo (or any, for that matter) sub I owned was one I designed myself and is very similar to the Rythmik design.

Placing a sub near-field to combat a specific frequency issue you can probably get away with whatever you want, as long as it has sufficient response at the target frequency, and you have the ability to adjust its phase to cancel the null (and nothing else).

It turns out that I did run Audyssey after toeing in my mains. I ran another one anyway. What difference did Audyssey return after pivoting each front 5.5" in and running a tighter cluster on positions 1-6 (all within both chairs)? The right front rose .5 and the left surround dropped .5. Everything else remained the same.

^^ can you not place your rear sub directly behind that couch? So does it sound a lot better having a third sub?

Not that it matters, obviously, but I gave you my opinion about your room and adding more subs previously. Why others encourage and applaud you to add sub after sub after sub in that area is beyond me. IMO, you've become sub obsessed. Instead of adding another sub, take that money and buy your wife a nice gift for allowing you to buy so many subs. Trust me, I'm not trying to be offensive; just being frugal, and JMO.

Unfortunately, no because there is a formal dining room directly behind the couch. I haven't got to let it rip yet hopefully tonight or tomorrow.

No offense taken. Everyone's tastes are different as far as bass goes and I happen to like a lot of tactile feeling in my room. Not sure yet if I'm even going to keep the 3rd FV. That has yet to be determined. I buy my wife nice things.

Have you confirmed this with measurements? Audyssey will change the frequency response and timing of sounds in your room, and AVRs don't give you a way to see that - you only have your ears.

@tvuong

Finally was able to crank it up for a bit. It definitely gave me more tactile bass at the MLP, but just not quite enough to justify the cost. Also, if I had just a little more room I'd place it behind the couch. Maybe one day I can move into a house with a dedicated theater on a suspended floor.

Thanks everyone who helped me along the way.

Yeah, I have heard going from 1 to 2 subs is 100% better but from 2 to 3 gains about 30-50% more. That last drop of performance always cost a whole lot more and it's called 'diminishing returns'.

Dual subs was HUGE for me. Going from 12" to 15" was better move too.

Finally going to get to put them thru some paces tonight with a good action popcorn flick.

I've contemplated going DIY for awhile now. Maybe quad 18"s just never have seen it come to fruition. I know DIY is the way to go for performance to dollar ratio, but it's time and effort. Also it's not really plug and play like what I have now. Just thinking out loud here.

^^ you do not listen loud enough to trouble selling your FVs to DIY. DIY ported sub is pretty big. I doubt anyone can build a ported sub similar size to the FV that has anywhere close to the FV output and accuracy. Remember Brian is a genius with a degree to back it up.

@tvuong

So after calibration I had one sub come back at -8.5 and the other -1. They are gain matched on the amps and I just want to make sure I set the trims correct via the AVR. I'll want to increase the -8.5 and decrease the -1 to meet halfway correct?

^^ yes, set them both to -4.5. Which sub was set to -1? That is a big difference in trim levels. I remember when I had one up in the front and one in the back, the trim levels difference was about 2.

What's strange is that it set my sub on the left much louder than the one on the right. The one on the left is corner loaded with two adjacent walls, so Audyssey has always set this one much quieter than the other one. Even when adjusting the levels after calibration you can clearly hear/feel that the sub on the left is louder than the other one. Maybe I'll recalibrate.

Wait, how do connect the 3 subs to your AVR? Both front subs should be connected to your AVR sub out1 via a Y cable, your rear sub should be connected to your AVR sub out2. What are the distances for sub 1 and sub 2 set by Aud?

^^ if the 2 front subs are equidistant to MLP, after gained match subs, sub trims in AVR should not be that big of a difference, 2db max in your case with one sub closer to walls. What are the subs distances set by aud? Are you using lfe in or line-in on subs? Rerun just the first mic cal to see before running all 8. Aud sets both of my equidistant subs to the exact same value with gained match subs.
