I thought 15" sub would be better too but when I looked at F12 and E15 spec on ascend site I see both of them have same frequency response : 14 Hz - 100 Hz (-2dB @ 14 Hz). I'm a newbie to subwoofer world so pardon my ignorance but someone please explain this.

No replacement for displacement.
In general, 15" subs have a lot more output.

Expanding on that, the volume of air moved is the surface area multiplied by the excursion. Larger drivers usually have a lot more excursion. You also get more power efficiency, a larger enclosure, and a more powerful amp.

It multiplies up to a lot more than 25% more inches.

Frequency response is the same by design, but output varies as has been said. The E15 has about 4 dB greater output at 20 Hz compared to the F12.

From the Rythmik website at http://www.rythmikaudio.com/products1.html :

Quote:
At 20 Hz, our subs vary in their maximum output capability. The output at 20 Hz is shown relative to F12.

F12: 0db (baseline)
F8/FM8: -1.5db
L12: -1db
LV12R: +2.5db
L22: + 4db
LVX12: +4db
E15HP: + 4db
F15HP: +4.5db
FVX15: +6.5db
FV15HP: +9.5db
F25: +8db

Going by surface area, btw, a 12" circle has ~113"sq and 15" about 177"sq, a ratio of 1.56 (i.e. more than 25%).

Wow - so there it is - will be selling the LV12R and ordering a FV15HP. Anyone relatively close to Southern NJ that wants an LV12R?

Thanks, this makes sense.

I'm going to order E15SE for my room which is on larger side (20x18x8). I would love to get ported sub but wife will never approve it. Are there better option that this? I'll probably get one more sub after few years but for now I would like to get best possible sub for my budget ($1500).

Mike, I was checking in our UPS account and your LV12R was delivered on July 5th so that's mean you still have 3 days left from your 45 days trial period. You are still able to return the LV12R in exchange for a FV15HP paying only for return shipping. Even if the LV12R goes out the return window by 10 days we can still process the return only if it's for an exchange/upgrade. I hope this make your decision a little bit more easier

LV12R->FV15HP = +7db = 224% more displacement!

(surface area only covers 2 of 3 dimensions)

If you are looking for piano black, then FV15HP-SE ($1700 shipped). If black oak is OK then F25 ($1683 shipped including lift gate) or FV15HP ($1342 shipped)

What is the size limitation? I presume that is why you say no ported.

Oh man! I kind of told the wife that I would wait until I got my bonus to either get a second LV12R or an upgraded sub. I have to pay return shipping on the LV12R and shipping to me on the FV15HP right?

I believe Enrico said the F25 driver is different from the other F/FV 15 subwoofers. He can tell you what was different but I gathered the F/FV version was better.

Considering that and the fact that I really can't pull the trigger just yet, I'll have to hold on to it for a bit and hope I can sell it for within $100 or so of what I paid for it by October when I'm really planning the upgrade. Appreciate you looking into it and giving me the info though.

The F25 has a pair of DS1501 drivers. It's the same driver we used to use in the F15 with A370PEQ3 amp. The FVX15 use the DS1502 which is a variation of the DS1501. The DS1502 has two stacked 25mm magnets to improve excursion limit and it works together with the HX405 amp. In terms of sound quality, both the DS1501 and DS1502 are identical.

I showed my wife some pictures of subwoofer from other people's home theater setup here. She was fine with size of E15SE or PSA S1500. She thought PSA S1800 was too big, so I'll have to go with 15" sealed max.

The FV15HP-SE with the black cone is actually really nice and elegant looking, like a nice piece of furniture. E15SE is smaller, though. You might be able to slide by, if you have your heart set on ported. Either choice is a win.

FVX is already a big improvement over your lv12r but the FV is even a bigger improvement. Then come the fv18 and fv25. This hobby is just bad. Only you can make that decision for yourself.
