Help me understand, what's the difference between a $50 BD player and a $500 one?

The Oppo UDP-203 is a UHD Blue Ray player so it plays 4K UHD Blue Rays and also regular Blue Rays, DVDs, SACD, etc.... My Oppo BDP-105D only plays regular Blue Rays and it cost $1300 so the new Oppo 203 is in fact pretty cheap

Does the $50 Sony Alan P posted not play 4K?

Nope. At this moment the cheapest 4K UHD Blue Ray player is the Xbox One S ($299) followed by the Samsung UDB-K8500 ($320). The problem with the Xbox One S is that it does not support direct bitstreaming for audio formats so no Atmos or DTS:X

Got it. Well for the moment $50 seems to make sense for me since it plays SACD and Blueray 1080p which is all I'm setup for. Guess I'll add a Blueray player to the list down the road when I upgrade to Atmos.

Well, to play 4K Blue Rays the cheapest component is the UHD Blue Ray player ($299). In your case you will need a 4K projector/TV which prices varies from $3000 for Faux-K (Epson 5040 or JVC RS400) to $28000 for native 4K (Sony VPL-VW675ES or VW1100ES). You will also need a new receiver capable of HDCP2.2 and HDMI 2.0

Yup. Hence the "down the road"

New receiver will also need to be 11.2 as I plan to buy another FV15HP at that point, 2 in ceiling Atmos speakers, and whatever 4K display device I go with. I may get the receiver between then and now to get the 9.2 I currently have setup. As discussed before.

I'm going to most likely buy the Oppo UDP-203 to replace my Oppo BDP-93. I don't have the 4k TV yet (LG OLED if I do it now) but I figure it can still down convert to 1080P for my Samsung Plasma. I have the Marantz AV8802A Preamp so I have the HDMI 2.0 / HDCP 2.2 part ready. Just need that TV. One thing at a time.

On my PC I just upgraded the video card to an Nvidia GTX 1080 so even my PC is HDMI 2.0 / HDCP 2.2 ready.

So what's the HDCPN2.2 for?

HDCP 2.2 is the copy protection protocol for UHD 4K Blue Ray players, 4K UHD TVs, projectors, receivers or any source or display capable of producing UHD content.

Yep, and if you want 4k via UHD, your entire chain from source to sink must all be able to speak HDCP 2.2.
