I am getting an Audyssey Pro calibration tommorow. There are 4 DSP programs on my Subs, so we may be doing some calibrations followed by listening tests. I know all the big bass movies, and I own about 300 Blu rays. But I am looking for a scene (or movie even...but a scene would be ideal) that contains all the important bass frequencies. This way I am not switching out discs, waiting for them to load, etc.

Please give me some recommendations for scenes that are torture tests for subwoofers, and that dig real deep in the frequency spectrum. BTW, I do not own Pulse. Thanks

My favorite disk to use is Monster's Inc blu-ray. There are so many great bass scenes that make it very easy to tell how my system is doing. Chapter 4 as they are walking through town has two great, but different bass moments. 23-19 has some really low frequency stuff. And of course the chapter "Back in the Apt." has awesome bass effects with a variety of tones. You could look for the waterfalls to see exactly what they cover.

What I like about the disk is that bass is so clean, very easy to distinguish tonality. I'm sure others who know more will have better suggestions, but that's always been my go-to disk to test bass.

The incredible Hulk(second one), and Transformers 2. They have a good mix of mid bass and low frequencies. Just play the last battle scene in Transformers 2, it has mid bass from helicopters which pounds, and low frequency pulse waves through out the scene.

This is the best 20-40hz scene on the planet but not much in the midbass department. The DarkNight has awesome midbass but below 20 hz is rare. WOTW hasd excellent less than 40 hz bass but again only a couple of midbass slams. It is hard to get all the frequncies within one scene but Transformers 2 does come very close. Gamelover can get all the frequencies from the same movie but will have to pick different scenes. Maybe 9 has some midbass slam because I know it has awesome low frequencies.

For a real quicky sub/bass evaluation scene, I personally like Chapter 2 (RAF air raid in Tunisia, northern Africa) in the movie Valkyrie... the events leading up to the loss of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg's (Tom Cruise) left eye and fingers on his right hand. You have everything in just that one scene... mid-bass, low bass, sub-sonic vibrations, the surrounds are active with planes passing over head, (dynamic) bass shocks and rumbling bass. In less than one short minute, your system is exposed to lots of varied bass excitement and I feel is a good evaluation tool you can also use to check for sync issues as well.

"For deep bass, the listener is not really listening to the speaker, but rather, is listening to the room as it is being played by the speaker."

Great suggestions. I just ran through some discs to get ready for tomorrow. I REALLY liked Xmen Last stand and Die Hard 4.

I guess I really don't need just one scene...where is the fun in that anyway

My hit list is gonna be:

Hulk
Live free or Die hard
Hellboy II
X men last stand
Transformers 2
Iron Man
Harry potter and the Order of Phoenix

Any episode of the original TV series "Star Trek" will get you that deep down earth shaking bass you need for testing and demo to impress the friends. My favorite Episode to test bass out with is "The Trouble with Tribbles".

On another note, there a few new blu-ray releases with 25Hz filter. This is not going to help us, the bass nuts

Bass, please. Shaken, not stirred.

Most of the movies I was going to suggest are already listed.

A couple additional ones I like to use for reference are:

Starwars Episode 1 - the pod race scene
Sherlock Holmes - there was some amazing low bass during a few scenes
Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World - great cannon blasts

I am sure there are more, but it sounds like you have a good idea by now.

Cloverfield ... Scene just before them entering the subway. This might be what you're looking for - great from subsonics to midbass - Very dynamic!

TS gas station - good scene for adjusting crossovers.

Star Wars Ep2 - opening scene with ship flybys and ending with the ship exploding just after it lands. That explosion rocks ... literally!

Star Trek - Any scene with ships entering warp - also, when Vulcan implodes - super deep stuff there.

ala Yoda...

"Tweeters". Heh! "Treble". Heh! A basshead craves not these things! ...

Just be careful of the Ironman Bluray, on somne systems it automatically puts on "night mode" (dynamic range compression) on your reciever (or was it the bluray player itself) and so any movie you play afterwards will have limited audio till you manually go in and turn the DRC off again.

Knowing is a somewhat closet movie that has some impact. The plane crash scene has a little "crap your pants" dynamics.

You are really missing out if you don't try the "pod emerging" scene in War of the Worlds and "depth charged" in U-571.

Both are tremendous, and "depth charged" has some nice surround as well.

Also, make sure to check out the Finding Nemo scene where Darla taps on the glass (you have to back it up about 2-3 seconds before the start of the scene for full effect).

I agree with the near-opening scene of Valkyrie with the plane attack...has it all.

I nearly lost a living room window when my Trinity got angry!

Actual phone call (see pic to left):

Me: "Yeah, a case of Diet Mountain Dew walking across my living room."
