I just bought a JBL PSW 1200 on craigslist for $60....when I listened to it at the guys house he was playing it off of just his ipod and not a receiver. It sounded pretty good however when I got back home I did the exact same thing with my ipod and it seems very boomy and not very powerful. Could this be because I am using it off of an ipod???

Sure, but it could also be because it's a cheapish sub. Careful placement and setup will help, but it won't make a good sub out of a bad one. That model is -6db at 90Hz and gets much worse below that, so "boominess" is about all it can do.
