My guess is that the TruAudio Red Mountain line, being US built on request with real wood veneer, is quite a bit more expensive than the Lava line-up. If it's up in the Empire or ULS-15 range, it could be a hard sell vs. the extremely low priced current Lava selection.

Thank you counsil for the review. I for one have no problem buying from "the little guy". In fact, I have Home Theater Direct's Level 3 LCR and absolutely love it. I can imagine anything sounding any better. Lava subs will be something that I consider ALOT before my next sub purchase.

I'm wondering too, though I don't think it's sealed. Looks like it has a slotted vent in the front.

Would be nice to get some info on that thing.

I am sure you already found these with a little google searching but 2 reviews I found on the Lava 12" Sub:
Quote:

I had heard about Lava subs from a friend - the whole factory direct, save big money thing. So when I finished my man cave (behind my house), I put a 12" sub in from GotAudio. Clean, crisp, deep and omni-directional of course. I'm kind of a self-described audiophile and own a lot of theater equipment. I'm thrilled with my new man cave and theater and love it when my wife comes out to tell me to at least keep the rumble noise down so the neighbors don't complain. Compares well to much, much more expensive subs. Way to go Lava! Super price and quick delivery.
BTW, every single item in my man cave was purchased on Amazon. I saved a ton.

I bought this sub not knowing much about it but have absolutely loved it. It has been worth every penny I paid for it. I would recommend this sub to anyone that is looking for a solid subwoofer at a great price.

Well that's three positive reviews. I wouldn't put much weight to two of them though. Mine of course is a solid review.

I see nothing wrong with returns as long as the customer did initially have the intention for keeping the product and is following return policies. A business has the right to govern their return policy but they should own up to what is written. Most businesses will offer returns because that is what customers want which is less risk. Nobody wants to be disappointed especially with expensive purchases. A company can choose a strict return policy but I guarantee they will lose customers.

I received mine today, and just finished watching War of the Worlds. Seems to blend in well with my Definitive 7002's, and for the price is not a bad looking unit. Ordered the sub Monday after reading counsil's review and so far I am pleased.

Was that with the subwoofers in the 7002's on or off? Is the Lava replacing any other sub?

My 7002's and 7006's are set to large. The Lava replaced an old sub that I bought 10 or more years ago. I am going to play around with resetting speakers to small and see how it sounds.
Audyssey reset all my speakers to large, and I decided to give it a try

I own 7002s as well. I have been very pleased with their performance. I wouldn't be surprised if you end out keeping at least the 7002s as large. The subs in those are flat to about 27 Hz. The subs in the 7006s are flat to about 31 Hz.

I to am a big fan of my Definitive speakers. I was really on the fence about buying a new sub because the 7002's and 7006's sounded so good. But after reading your review of the Lava I thought what the heck the Lava was a small price to pay as an experiment. I was really pleased with the performance of the Lava tonight. It seemed to give the movie just that little extra punch.

Come on!!! You should be able to set your speakers to small and the sub should go the work. If the lava can't then it's a waste

My BIL has one. It's not too bad but I wasn't super impressed. But then again I'm coming from a bit of a skewed perspective with my DTS-10.

Dumb enough to spend lots of cash on this junk!

Take a look here...

It reads like the price was supposed to be 338.46 after the discount.

$338.46 Is the price on the website - the coupon was for an additional 25% off

Eric - maybe you can give AVS members a special members only coupon

What do you say - 10-15% (or more - we can be greedy) off just for us

Yeah we have absolutely no problem doing that for AVS members. If you are an AVS member simply email us at our customer service email address with your AVS members name so we know you an actual AVS member and we will email you back with your own unique coupon code for 15% off.

Does that work?

I would like to apologize for my earlier comments in this thread. You guys at Lava subs seem very professional and very kind. And you also seem to be offering a good product at a very fair price point. Your company should do very well here as long as you keep it up.

Good luck and god bless.

Anyhow, maybe your sound card won't clip, but I thought I had read or understood that REW was useless for that sort of measurement.

I was pondering the spec that reads: Frequency Range. Lowpass:

22-200Hz (+/- 3db) boost: 13db@40Hz

The 13 db of boost is clearly visible, (and certainly audible).

I can't remember seeing such a large amount of boost at so high a frequency. I wonder how much THD that 13 db of boost brings with it? I would guess not so much at lower volumes but I wonder at what level this boost causes THD to exceed 10% at, and below 40 Hz?

Hello all,
I'm new to AVS and wanted to ask the guys who own/tried the lava subs if they have the airy, muddy, "boompf" sound associated with cheap subs?(Like the polk in the kid's room)
I've never liked the sound of ported subs and currently am using a velodyne spl12II connected via speaker outs from my front channels amp in order to incorporate sub with music. The sound is very tight and accurate and doesn't "linger". How do you have your sub connected esp. for listening to music?
For some reason the weight of the subs is'nt listed in the specs and the first thing I thought was "cabinet probably cheap particle board like all the others". Glad to hear they're not. MDF is HEAVY, so it looks like maybe they are better quality.
Look forward to hearing from you soon!

I have read this forum exchange from the beginning and am pleased to see it has evolved from understandable skepticism to a great, educated back and forth on an apparent new, quality contender in the affordable sub genre. With so many thread-crappers littering the internet's forums, it's this sense of community, tolerance, and education that makes AVS a great forum to be a part of.

I am currently in the market for a new sub and had narrowed my search down to the Elemental Designs A2-300 ($415), a very popular model, before these early reviews of Lava caught my eye. And, obviously, the lower price and forum discount, have now made the Lava an even more attractive alternative.

Can anyone speculate on how you think the LSP12 would stack up to the A2-300?

Thanks.

What drivers and amps do they use in the Lava subs? Can anyone comment on the build quality of the box? Bracing? These are things that need to be discussed. Also spl levels etc
