So my Velodyne DEQ-8R came in today! Here are some unboxing shots and my initial thoughts:

It's here!

Double Boxed and custom foam, fantastic packing job.

This is supposedly refurbished but hell if I can find anything wrong with it. The piano black trim is sharp and matches my NHTs cool.gif

120Hz high pass filter, DSP, and an EQ mic... whole lot of features for $229!

Hooked it up, ran the setup, and fired it up! After a few minutes of listening, I am thoroughly impressed. It is very fast, playing Battery by Metallica I can hear every single drum beat in the solo. Compared to my F-12 it is much more musical, obviously I won't have the same output but it puts out 180 watts RMS and for a small/medium bedroom in nearfield, it's more than I need.

My SuperZeros seem a little more lively, I would imagine the high pass filter helped take some strain off the amp and everything blends very nicely. I can't localize the bass that well, which is good, and I am anxious to try out some games and movies and see how it does. I will write up something a little more detailed after some more listening, just thought I would give you guys some pictures and my first impressions. If you want a musical sub in the <$300 range, this is a great choice.

It looks awesome, too. Definitely a nice finish for the price.

I bet that setup must really now blow away the Mackies you used to have smile.gif

I don't know if it's mentioned here or not, but the EW-100 and KW-100 are the same inside and out. Pretty much both are a Klipsch product except one is branded as Energy. Though pricing between the two tend to fluctuate a little. I managed to get the EW-100 at Future Shop for $149.99 in either July or August of 2012. As of late, Future Shop had the EW-100 at a final clearance price of $129.99 and have sold out. Best Buy here in Canada has the KW-100 for $499.99, but the cheapest currently is at Canada Computers for $249.00. Picked one up a couple days ago at Best Buy and got it priced matched.

This sub has been a wonderful purchase! The sound is much better than the Mackies I replaced. Sometimes I wish I had a little more power, and I might end up replacing the t-amp with something like a Emotiva Mini, but that would be a ways away and I am very happy with this setup. After hearing this sub, I really dislike listening to music with the F-12, its boomy and slow... rolleyes.gif Once I add a center channel I will be eyeing that Rythmik LV12R with my tax return cool.gif

The Theater Solutions don't get a great review on the few posts I found in this site, but for the price I'm definitely willing to hear more. I have a very similar sized living room with full side openning to the kitchen area. Total volume is about 5000 ft^3. I would love to stay under $250. Are there any other suggestions out there?

Maybe some more experiences to refute the negative reviews of Theater Solutions? Or is the Premier Acoustics PA-150 worth the extra $150?

Not sure if the extra $150 is over the Theater Solutions sub, if it is and you are thinking $350 total for the PA-150, make that an extra $200. I tried to get one a couple days ago for $350 and they would not budge below $399. I mentioned prices on here reported at $350 but was told that the manufacturer had increased the price. In the end I went with the BIC PL200, it should be here Thursday and to say I cannot wait is an understatement. I already yanked the 8" HTIB sub out of the living room.

It's going to be tough to fill that for most people on here. But from what I have gathered the best you are going to get under $400ish is the nxg-500 for $269. But nowhere had them today. Couple weeks they should be back in stock places.

Great review here

You can now add the $200 (plus shipping) Dayton Audio Sub-1500. If the performance of the Smaller 8-12" models is any indication, this new budget 15" model should be a great performer for the money. cool.gif

I was wondering if/when they were going to make a 15" version. Thanks for the link.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite

this would be a great head to head comparison to the Theater Solution 15F!

Why go out to a movie theater?

My BIC-PL200 arrived today, but I need some help with the crossover settings. Annoyingly I discovered that my old Onkyo has no subwoofer output. So while I save to replace that, I am forced to use the speaker level inputs and the onboard crossover. That leads me to my question... I am running Polk Monitor 70 front speakers, where should I set the crossover on the back of the BIC? I believe the Polks can play fairly low, or at least the spec says they can.

Oh boy... Transformers is playing and the helicopter near the beginning sounds awesome. This just with the sub plopped in the middle of the floor, my wife is going to be mad at me... hahaha I can already tell this is going to be an insane upgrade over the 8" passive HTIB sub I had before.

Set it to 80hz, that is usually the best spot.

Thanks, so far I have the volume around 50-60% and it is working really well considering the size of the room (3,300 cu ft, open to the kitchen of about the same size). You can't really feel the bass, but you can definitely hear it and notice things rattling.

I do have a possible issue though, last night when turning off the receiver the sub started humming. I turned everything back on, humming went away, turned it back off, humming started. In the end I had to use the master switch on the back to turn the sub off instead of using the auto. This morning I switched it back to auto, it stayed off, but I have not yet used the TV today to see if it hums on the auto setting again. I am hoping to use the auto option, but if not will switch it on and off manually until I upgrade receiver and can use an LFE output instead of the high level inputs.

The strange piece is I had used it a couple times earlier in the day, and the sub powered off fine with the receiver going off.

Edit: Did some investigating, I have the sub hooked up using speaker level inputs, if I disconnect the speaker wire at either the subwoofer end, or the receiver end, the hum goes away. It appears I am getting interference through the speaker wire, not sure how to eliminate it though. I also do not have the sub connected to the same outlet as the receiver (not sure I can get them to the same outlet either).

Got this in my inbox today...

Matt,

After a few good reviews the demand exceeded our supply (by quite a bit) - We've asked the factory to manufacture another (larger) batch for us but they won't be in for a while.
Sorry for the inconvenience - we'll send you an email once they are available again.

Regards,
NXG Support

With the NXG being rear ported, would that be an issue throwing that into a corner fairly close up to a wall?

Got an email from nxg as well,

Chad,

We had some great reviews on it and customer demand skyrocketed - we didn't have anywhere near enough of them on hand - our forecasts were way off...
Short story is we're scrambling to make more of them but it will take some time to get them manufactured and shipped to the US - shipping alone usually takes about 30 days.
No firm back-in-stock date yet but I suspect it will be about 60 days or so...

Regards,

I am in the market for a new sub as well. My ED A2-300 went out on me. Does not look like it may be worth fixing.

I have the opportunity to buy a 5 year old SVS PB10 for $200 or the PL-200 ($280) with warranty or the F12 for $200.

Would appreciate some opinions.

My viewing area is 15' x 18' and is open in the rear to a bar area. The ED A2-300 provided plenty of bass when working.
