Good question. It's not even showing as "Out of Stock" in any of the usual places it's sold.
I sent NXG Technolgy an email asking them if they're still making it. Will let you know as soon as I get a reply.

A quick thank you

Thank you so very much for this Important info!

Wilson;21026689]I've often seen requests from people who are looking to purchase budget subwoofers. You can count me among those who tries to respond and help those folks out, but after replying to the hundredth such question I got to thinking; exactly how many companies are out their making budget subs? Intrigued, I decided to try and find out for myself.

First I had to decide exactly what constituted a 'budget' subwoofer. After going back over numerous posts I selected $300 as the ceiling, so anything that costs less qualifies. I also decided that the $300 price should be what you can reasonably expect to get the sub for, not it's "suggested" retail price. In other words, what most people can rightly assume to pay without the need to wait for some "clearance sale" or restricted holiday event.

Since most of the budget sub questions are asked about HT systems I original decided that a 10" driver would be the minimum. After going back and forth though I decided to include subwoofers with 8" drivers too.

Having a driver size and budget target I began scouring the internet. The list below is what I can up with, sorted alphabetically by manufacturer. In some instances you'll notice more then one link associated to a particular model. I did this so there was not only a reference to the manufacturers webpage, but also an example of a place to buy it from that shows a typical price.

You may also notice subs that don't have a link to their respective manufacturers webpage. While compiling this list I found several companies that sell exclusively through a single retailer, so links to their webpage are of little value.

Note: this thread is not intended for anyone to debate how good or bad something is, only to let others know what's out there. It's the responsibility of the individual looking for a subwoofer to make up their own mind about what they want, and which products meet their needs. I expect a person looking to buy something will be able to do their own research and ask questions in other threads, so let's keep all of that out of this one. However, I do understand that part of the process is to ask questions and solicit advice, so to that I end created the Budget Subwoofers Discussion thread. Please use that to ask your questions and to see what others have said.

If everyone adheres to the intend of this thread it may ultimately end up being a valuable resource we can simply point people to.

Where/how are you seeing it as b stock? Or have they already sold out?

In the overview it said "save even more with a restocked/refurbished unit". i just click on it and it says no longer available. I might have gotten the last one.

Has NXG change the name of the NX-BAS-500? Or did Amazon always have it listed as "NXG 12 500W POWERED SUBWOOFER 24HZ-200HZ BLACK PEBBLE FINISH"?

It's the same just a different vendor.

I looked it up and it said I purchased it already so it's the same exact one.

I think you're right. It does appear to be the same one. And Jim Wilson's review of the NXG BAS 500 is among the reviews.
Unusual for a 3rd party vendor to sell something at a lower price than Amazon. They usually gouge people when they are the only one with something in demand.

Which sub should I buy?

Hi. I am new to this site and don't know much about audio but am interested in adding a sub to my pair of Ascend CBM-170's in a room 40 x 12 x 9. Exclusively used for music. I found three subs on craigslist used:

JM Lab Chorus 700 $250
Velodyne CHT-10 $100
Acoustech H-100 $150

What would you all recommend? Or would you recommend something more current instead? I have been looking at these subs new though I'd rather save the money and buy used if possible:

Bic Acoustech PL-200
Cadence CSX-12 Mark II
Premier PA-120
Dayton Sub-1200?

Gosh I'd really like the HSU STF-2 but don't want to spend the $400 and not sure if it will handle the whole room. Anyone got one used?

Thanks for any thoughts.
Patrick

Your room is over 4300 ft^3, which is definitely on the larger side, and as such none of the subwoofers you're considering stand a chance of doing much I'm afraid. Three or four of them perhaps, but a single would simply be overwhelmed. I suspect your Ascend speakers are over-matched as well. Given your situation a pair of Dayton SUB-1500's should be able to hold their own, so perhaps that's one option to consider.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite

Thanks Jim for your input. The tricky thing about the room is that it is a kitchen and a living room that are divided by a staircase that runs across the 12' width. So it is really a 20' x 12' room that is adjoined by another 20' x 12' room. Given that, would you still feel the same way about my choices? I just started looking at the NXG BAS-500 (based on your review of it as being more musical than most in this class). Given that I have neighbors attached to my townhouse on either side, I don't need to blow my roof off just want to add more bottom dynamics to what I have. Thanks again.

I should also note that I will be really only listening to music in the kitchen where we spend most of our time and where the speakers and sub will be located. Thanks again.

The difficulty exists in how the physics of a subwoofer work. Even though you look at the space and see an individual living room and kitchen a sub only see's space, so anything contiguous it will try and pressurize. And therein lies the problem, for if you don't have sufficient output the overall effect will be very unsatisfactory.

When trying to discern what subwoofer(s) will work you have to account for the entire area, otherwise you'll end up with a weak and lifeless bass response. To an extent you can mitigate a portion of that by placing the subwoofers near field (close to the listeners) but that's not always possible from an esthetics standpoint. With music you can sometimes get away with under-sizing your subwoofers, but for HT applications it's really not advisable to shortchange bass. A large part of the experience is contributed by the sub, and if there's a deficiency it becomes rather pronounced.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite

Since I will only be using the system for music, if I place the subwoofer near the listening position, would one subwoofer be somewhat effective musically? And if so, which would you recommend? Thanks much.

The most musical budget subwoofer I've heard is the NXG NX-BAS-500, but it seems as though they might be out of stock right now. "Musical" is a bit of a misnomer though, because in my opinion no budget subwoofer truly achieves that designation (for me, anyway). But the NXG sounds like it should cost more then it does, which is always a good thing. The Velodyne would probably be my next choice, from a sound quality perspective, but even near-field a 10" subwoofer is going to struggle in a room that large. Beyond that is perhaps the H-100, which to my ears sounded pretty good for the asking price (although the one I reviewed was the H-100II, so I'm not sure if it differs from the one you're considering).

Wow. I had the same set-up. But I've upgraded since then. Try buying another! It will really help with any nulls and for $200 you really can't go wrong!

I have been using the Acoustech PL-200 for several years now and am looking to upgrade al\l my speakers including the sub. It's also been a long time since I've been on here and am unfamiliar with newer subs that have some out in the past few years so I'm looking to you guys for advice. I'm looking for a sub that can go down to 20Hz (or lower), I have a budget of about $500 and can probably go a little higher if need be. Or would I be better off getting a second PL-200?

A second PL-200 will give you more of what you already have, and if that's sufficient for your needs now then it's probably worth considering. But it seems as though you're looking for something it can't do - which is output below 20Hz - and if that's the case then no amount of PL-200's will get you closer to your goal. The room size plays a huge role with regards to what a subwoofer can/can't do though, so you need to account for that before you purchase anything (HxWxD of the entire open space you'll be putting it in).

For $500 the SVS PB-1000 is a winner and has many very happy fans. If you can spend a little more the Rythmik LV-12R is a very solid choice.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite
