Got the JBL SP150 yesterday. I didnt place it properly because I already decided where I wanted it. Didnt do any eq beyond YPAO. Living room open to kitchen, dining room and hallway. Roughly 2000 cu ft in an apt.
It came well boxed (not double boxed) and is nice looking.
I have to say Im impressed with this sub. It can be a little boomy and it doesnt go very low (40 maybe?). But for the most part I would consider it fairly accurate.
Auto on feature works well.
What shocked me most is the output. Only 9 o'clock provided 0 on YPAO. Turned it up afterwards to 11 o'clock and it does very well.
The living room is my secondary setup. 4 5.25" bookshelfs and a dual 4" center. This sub was exactly what I was looking for. Something cheap to make the system full range.
For an office or bedroom setup on the cheap I would highly recommend this sub.
Overall, if you have fair expectations I think just about anyone would be happy with this sub. If it proves to be reliable I would consider it a very good deal at the $100 it is selling at now. For the $80 I paid its a steal.

Thanks for the overview Bond. If it goes on sale again I will pick it up. I had a feeling it would be decent.

So Joe, how many subwoofers will that give you? About a dozen, isn't it?

If you take yourself too seriously, expect me to do the exact opposite

The Klipsch SW-112 is currently going for $249 on Amazon and is available with Prime. I picked one up which should be delivered tomorrow. Not bad for a sub that originally retailed for $600

so, I haven't read too much of this thread, so apologies if this is covered a few pages back, but basically I'm looking for a cheapo sub woofer to use in the living room. The thing is, this is not the primary theater setup in the house, and this setup is mostly for the wife and kids. The wife doesn't want anything loud and boomy. She doesn't mind a bit of bass as long as it's very tight and controlled and not shaking pictures off the wall and such.

Also, it would be a plus if the sub is actually somewhat smallish and doesn't have a huge footprint.

The sub that was in the room was an Energy ES-12 sub. (something is wrong with it. When turned on, it just kinda has a loud not stop rumble noise going. Not sure what happened to it..)

The front soundstage is 3 tiny satellite speakers. (3 NHT Super Zeros) . These type of speakers really desperately need a sub to help them out. But again, this is mainly the setup for the wife, and she doesn't want a ton of bass shaking the place up.

Your room size (HWD) and budget are key pieces of information necessary in order to determine what products will fit your needs. Also, some indication of what you consider "smallish" would be helpful. Not everyone has the same opinion about what constitutes a small subwoofer.

I'm quite happy with the $138 Dayton Sub-1200 I got from Parts Express. They also have a 10" version for $110. Replaced a blown Bic H100 and sounds similar as far as I can tell.

That's good to know. I narrowed it down to these 2 for my budget so will probably go with the 12HG. Haven't seen the Fry's $199 special the last few weeks so I'll just wait. I'm a Bond fanatic myself.

I had that sub maybe 1 1/2-2 years ago when frys.com had it for $99. It was an awful sub, not much better than the Polk PSW10. It was easy to overdrive and had a lot of distortion and, as you mentioned, had no low end capability what so ever. It also had a cabinet rattle at times. Just an awful product in general. I would MUCH rather pay a little more and get the Dayton sub-1200.

Don't let inflated "suggested retail price" fool you. The SW-112 isn't a $600 sub by any stretch. It's a typical budget sub with a frequency response that drops off a cliff below 30Hz. If you paid $250 for it that MAY be bout what it's worth. I think I would still go with the Klipsch sub-12hg at $199, that is if frys.com run sit at that price again.

It's been discontinued for quite some time, not out of production. A year or so ago it seemed to quit going on sale at frys.com, then it started coming back again on sale often. Discontinued items can often stay in production for a long time. The Polk Monitor SII speakers were supposedly discontinued a few yaers ago, yet they kept making them for newegg.

In a space of ~2000 ft.^3, it may not matter much. (Is the application of the sub strictly supplementary?)

"Used - Like New" Klipsch Sub-12HG - USD 206.99 delivered + tax

Anyone ever buy "Used - Like New" from Amazon Warehouse Deals?

I bought a router and remote control that way and didnt have any problems.
Thats a fairly high dollar item though. I would call Amazon and find out exactly what your return policy is. Amazon has always been great to me.

I prefer buying this way. Just got an auto dimming rear view mirror from them for $103. Nothing wrong, full factory warranty, just had damaged packaging and Amazon re-packaged it. Showed up in perfect (albeit re-packaged) condition! Next best price? $175...

I buy from this method whenever possible to save money. I mean, what the heck? The box gets tossed anyway.

I'd wager the output is pretty similar above 30Hz, but the PB-1000 will get you down to 20Hz and likely be more articulate.

Agreed. Except that I would say much more articulate.

I buy from this method whenever possible to save money. I mean, what the heck? The box gets tossed anyway.

+1

And if the packaging gets destroyed, but the product escapes unscathed, then the packaging died a hero.

Recently purchased an SUB-12HG. I would have chosen the PB-1000 if it were within my budget.

On another note. I remember seeing a post somewhere on a user's guide to setting up a sub (i.e. phase set to ___, crossover set to ____, run audyssey, etc) but I can't seem to find it. Am I dreaming or does this post/thread exist? Thanks.
