At moderate levels of output, maybe.

At higher levels, distortion may be perceptible.

Some things to consider (albeit not scientific):

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Some of the questions below ask you to assign a number on a scale. Go ahead and estimate for in-between situations.

Your Room:

____ Room volume. 0 point for 1000 cu ft; 1 point for 2000 cu ft; 2 points for 4000 cu ft; 3 points for 8000 cu ft; 4 points for 12,000 cu ft.
____ 0 points for a reflective room; 1 point for an absorptive room.
____ 0 points for subwoofer placement in a corner & on the floor (near three room boundaries); 1 point if near two room boundaries; 2 points if near only one (usually the floor); 4 points if outdoors.
____ 0 points of room is enclosed; 1 if open doors and hallways; 3 if room is very open (or if outdoors.)
____ Room score. Sum of above four scores.

Your listening style:

____ How loud will the bass be at its loudest? 0 point if comfortable; 3 points if your wife tells you to turn it down; 6 points if you keep saying ”What did you say?”; 10 points if you know the cops on a first-name basis.
____ How demanding is whatever you listen to? 0 point for string quartets; 3 points for jazz; 6 points for rock & roll; 10 points for hip-hop.
____ Listening style score. Sum of the above two scores."

Set your sub gain (volume) to about 9 o'clock, Audyssey states 12 o'clock in it's setup but that's usually too high.

On the sub, there is a crossover dial, turn this to the highest point, this disengages the sub low-pass filter and let's your receiver handle the bass management.

Leave the phase at 0.

Run Audyssey and see what it comes back with for your level. You ideally want to be somewhere between 0 and -3dB. If it comes back and says -6 or more, your sub gain is too high, turn it down a bit and run Audyssey again. If it comes back +3 or more, turn the sub gain up slightly and repeat. Once you have the proper level set, you need to leave that dial alone. You can add more bass in Audyssey by bumping up the sub trim level 3-6dB.

Depending on your front speakers, Audyssey will likely set a crossover between 60 and 100Hz. You want your front speakers set to small regardless of what they are. This should get you going with the sub, just make sure you have a good location for it before doing all this. I recommend the "sub crawl" method which can be found on YouTube. Placement is half the battle.
OK, Klipsch Sub 12 arrived today and I followed your method. Thank you.

The good news, sub crawl clearly sounded best in the corner that seemed like the most normal placement.

Audyssey is being a little strange though. Receiver is an Onkyo TX NR509 and fronts are the Pioneer FS51 with the CS21 center. (set to small)

With the sub gain at 9 o clock, it sets the sub level at -9db. Minimum on the knob is about 7 o clock. Maybe it's a psychological thing, but I'd prefer that gain closer to 12. I feel like I'm leaving a lot on the table. Do I just bump the trim level on the receiver up to -3db or can I increase the gain too?

Crossover currently at 80, would 100 or 120 be worth trying?

Thanks for any help.

Yup, it's psychological. Not every manufacturer sets their gain outputs the same. For example, PSA and JTR are known for having a gain structure that requires you to set the dial beyond the midway point. That's not wrong, of course, just their preferred way of doing it. The only thing that really matters is tuning it to what works best for your particular situation.

If Audyssey dropped the AVR trim to -9dB than it's telling you the sub is loud, by its standard. However, Audyssey is notorious for setting things on the weak side so most people adjust up anyway (myself included). Try upping the trim to -5dB and see if that sounds better to you, with the key words being "sounds better to you". In the end that's the only thing that matters. Adjustments are there for you to... well, adjust. So long as you aren't pushing anything to the extreme you should be fine.

Not if your goal is to have the sub output more.

No need to discern value - that's up to the person looking to purchase one. Including the code would be helpful though.

It is kind of a gimmicky, but you have to go to the Fry's website, sign-up and they email you with various ads which includes a personal unique code. You provide your personal code when you checkout (either at the store or online).

The Klipsch Reference-12 is $197 (with code) through 1/9/16. Regular price $449. Frys ads are sometimes regional. I'm in Northern California.

Jim Im surprised your not aware of these, some of the most cut throat speaker deals around. Infinity, Klipsch, Polk etc.. Also some very good deals on AVR's, sometimes 50% off. Denon, Yamaha, Sony, etc... Also great deals on computers, Tv's, cables etc..

Ive been chipping away at upgrading my system, and getting a lot of bang for my buck.

I seriously think they may be losing money on some of the stuff they ship out.. I just got a delivery today, probably another tomorrow...

There are no Fry's near me so I never really consider them when it comes time to buy anything. Shame too because it seems as though they run some pretty decent sales from time-to-time.

Polk PSW505 is $169 at amazon.com right now. That's one of the few popular budget subs I've never auditioned/owned. My curiosity has finally gotten the best of me, so I ordered one. We'll see how it stacks up against the best budget sub, IMO, the klipsch sub-12.

That thing looks impressive. The price cut seems ridiculous. Do you know what it was selling for before? The power rating, slot port and 5 year warranty seem legit.

The PSW505 has been up and down price wise for the past few years. It has often been around $200 and occasionally in the $150-$180 range. Otherwise it's priced a lot more at times, which wouldn't make any sense to pay more.

On paper it has a much less powerful amp than the sub-12. For some reason frys has really been pushing the r12sw lately and quit running the sub-12 on sale. Perhaps they weren't selling many of the r12sw subs and needed to start moving some of their inventory.

I purchased the PSW505 last week.

i had an older sony 12" with 90W rms and i also have hte polk PSW110 (10" with 100w rms)

I replaced the sony. HUGE upgrade. this thing is pretty loud. it blows away both of my current subs including hte PSW110 which is currently somehow 249 on amazon right now.

Last night i noticed that it dropped down to 169. Debating whether to get another one, i said screw it. bought a 2nd one for 169. also emailed amazon support, and they are price adjjusting my first sub since it literally got delivered on monday, which was $249,so now i got both subs for 169. cant wait to have both going at once. for 340, im not sure how much better you can get.

When I bought my Sub-12 from them last month they pushed hard for the R12SW saying how it was a better sub. Generally I get sound advice from Fry's employees because they are supposed to go through technical training on the department they work in, but this guy must have not paid attention. I provided him what I learned from here and his final words were "well it's your money".

One thing those who already own the Polk PSW10 can try is adding polyfill to the inside of the cabinet. Remove that guard first, which I think makes only a slight improvement, but a bigger improvement is adding polyfill. There already is a couple of sheets inside, but fill the back side, behind the piece of wood dividing the amp from the driver. Add a little around the driver as far up inside as you can reach and by the port. Don't pack it in there, just loosely and not totally filled. It made a substantial difference in my PSW10 for reducing port noise. I decided to go ahead and get a PSW505 and also add polyfill to it, as it has been known to have port noise issues, as well.

Trying to find a good HT only sub, games and movie use, no music. Trying to be around $200, but could wait a bit and go to $300 if worth it.
Onkyo receiver, and infinity primus speakers. 15x15x8 L shape room (5x5 is a closet).

Reliability and warranty are strong selling points for me.

I see the Klipsch R12-SW for under $200 at frys often, and the Polk PSW505 for $160. And Crutchfield has the Primus PS312 for $330 which I could maybe stretch for, rated 400w RMS and 5 year warranty.

It's not really possible to get a good home theater sub for $300 or less. The Klipsch sub-12 is a great sub when on sale for $199, but its been a little while since it was on sale. Even that sub, which has strong output, doesn't offer up much under 25Hz. You have to get closer to $500 for a true HT sub. Like the RBH I-12 or SVS PB-1000.

Then why is there a sticky thread on budget subs $300 and under?

I get that spending more will get a huge bump up, but I don't need huge sound really. I'm nearly ok with the output level of the Onkyo HTIB sub I have, just want something cleaner and less slap happy. I cant imagine a $200-300 12' ~300w sub not making a huge improvement over the 10" onkyo 120W (max, unknown rms) Ive been using for 6 years.

Sure, something like the Klipsch sub-12 will be a very noticeable improvement over a 10" HTIB sub, but that still doesn't mean it's a quality home theater sub. This is a budget sub thread, so you have to expect some limitations when you are dealing with budget subs.
A quality home theater sub will get you strong output down to around 20Hz or better. Budget subs aren't really capable of delivering the really low LFE, which is a key factor for home theater. A quality sub will also be more accurate, clean and linear. All of these aspects are also something budget subs have a hard time with.
