A Newbie needing help choosing a budget Sub for music only.
The room is about 1500 cubic feet (maybe less) and the sub will be used for mixing music I've recorded on my DAW. Currently I have 3 pair of near field monitors all costing between $70 -$200 (Alesis Passive 6, Hosa Cue 5, and JBL Control 5. The Amp is a crown XLS1000 if that matters.
The Sub will under my desk in an area of about 24"H x 24" D x 20" W.
I don't need (or want) wall shaking floor pounding bass. I need the bass to be clean, tight, and accurate as recorded so when I mix it I'm getting an accurate representation to start with. This way when I play the music on various systems, it sounds good.
I might be able to fit a Dayton Sub-1200 I've read so much about but not sure it's the right one and might cramp how I sit at the PC.
The SVS PB-1000 has been recommended but I can't see spending $500 on a sub when the speakers are cheapies.
Between this forum and looking at reviews on the Internet, I've come across probably 25+ different Subs (8"--12") and at this point am totally confused.
Is there something out there under $300 that would fit my needs? Just found the Klipsch SW-450 for $188. Space is tight but maybe I can turn it sideways? What do you think?

Since you want something with decent sound quality, inexpensive, small and don't require very deep bass take a look at the ML Dynamo 300. It satisfies all your criteria, especially the first one since you can usually get it for around $150.

Thanks Jim. That was near the top of my list along with the Polk PSW111 and Energy ESW-8 but a friend of mine said the 8" will never work because it can't produce low enough notes. He said he'd go for no less than a 12" but then compromised with 10". He also said if I had to go with 8" the SVS PB-1000 would be a good possibility except I really didn't want to spend $500 and not sure it's 3+X better than the ML. Am I selling myself short?

I'd definitely skip the PSW111 - that one is not known for stellar sound quality.

What type of music are you mixing? The Dynamo should be solid down to about 30Hz with a near-field placement like you're going to have.

Not sure if this was a typo, but just in case it isn't... the PB-1000 has a 10" driver, not 8".

I either create an entire Jazz, Bossa Nova, or Samba composition, or record myself playing Sax/Flute with background music. I either use Acoustic Bass or Electric Bass and some synth stuff from my DAW. Also wanted to ask. Since the sub will be in a rather confined space, does it do anything to the sound like make it more pronounced or something like that ? And is that a good thing for a smaller Sub? I might be able to fit a 10" sub in that area if you think it would make that much of a difference.

Until you said "synth stuff" I still felt the Dynamo 300 would be a good fit, but depending upon what you do with that it may no longer be the case.

Corner loading a subwoofer tends to give it more output, but given its placement I'm not certain that would be of much benefit. A lot of people do that in their home theaters in order to avail themselves of the free additional output.

If you need more depth that the Dynamo can provide getting a sub with a larger driver is probably a good idea. I don't know of any good units within your price range though. Perhaps someone else can recommend one.

You sound very picky. Get an SVS SB1000 and never look back. Its very small, is very good quality, has a great warranty and the sound quality will probably blow your mind and be worth every penny.
Best thing is, in the very unlikely event you dont like it, you can return it for free.

To me, this is the key point here. It sounds like the sub will be surrounded on all sides and not allow for proper ventilation of the port, so I would recommend trying to find a sub with a front port. These are pretty rare, but you can find them.

The Klipsch R110-SW would suit you well, but its in the $400 range. Or for a little more go with the PB or SB-1000.

He could face the port towards where he sits but thats another reason why I suggested the SB1000.

I suppose if its a down firing sub. But if its rear ported, that would be pretty ugly having the amp plate facing out.

Agreed, the SB1000 or the PB-1000 (front ported) would both be great options.

Thank you all for your input. Since this is my first Sub, I decided to order the Dynamo 300 to get my feet wet. It is 1/3 the price of the SB or PB and I think it will serve the purpose well but if it doesn't, I'll be looking to upgrade. I need to have a starting point so this is it. I'll let you know how I like it. Thanks again to all who helped.

Was coming here to post that. I'm actually thinking about getting the R-15M Bookshelves and waiting on the R-25C to go on sale again. I think that would be a better LCR than what I have now. The Sub-12 has made me more interested in Klipsch.

I had picked up a SUB 650 a few years back, when they were being phased out and sold for peanuts. Mine turned out to have a problem with the amp - there was almost no deep bass - but there were no more to be had so they couldn't swap it for another. Jamo didn't want to repair it either, so I ended up with a refund. I didn't get to hear what it was truly capable of I'm afraid.

In the past I've contemplated reaching out to them for a review unit, but never followed through. I might someday. Either way, for $200 it doesn't look like bad deal. Newegg leaves out some key information - little things, like size and frequency response for example - and unfortunately that exact model doesn't appear on Jamo's website. The J 12 SUB looks very similar though, so you might be able to use those spec's. If so, the F3 is 27Hz. That means it probably won't be a deep bass monster, but with a little room gain it should be respectable.

If you take yourself too seriously, expect me to do the exact opposite

The sub in question is the Jamo J 12 SUB, which appears on the Jamo website, and the suffix "DA" refers to the "dark apple" finish of the cabinet (the Newegg publication is imprecise):

http://www.jamo.com/speaker-types/su...rs/?sku=J12SUB

The driver might get similar performance to that of a Klipsch SUB-12. (Jamo is owned by the Klipsch Group.)

i would put it closer to the reference 12, the amp is a 200/400, not the 300/600 in the sub-12
