well the instructions say for small speakers to use 120 hz, and thats what the mic setup set the sub to im pretty sure. the knob only goes up to 90, so should i just change the receiver settings to 100 or 90 and see how it sounds? or just leave it since thats what the instructions and auto-setup set them to.

im sort of finding that various programs sound vastly different. regular talking tv like the news seems to have virtually no subwoofer usage, but then i watched the last 2 episodes of the living and the dead on bbc america, and that seemed to have a lot of base and when the main male character talked, just his voice was producing a lot of base.

im thinking my set up is pretty much correct overall, i just wish i could hear an example of like a firework exploding or something like that where the base should have an 'explosive' punch to it. or i also havent adjusted any of the 'tone' settings, maybe something in there would make it even better.

i dont want to start getting it too loud and then get used to having it abnormally loud.

Setting the Crossover switch to "Out" should bypass/disable the sub's internal crossover (LPF).

Unless the news is read by James Earl Jones, don't expect much bass from a news broadcast.

Bought Polk PSW10 on sale for $80, just a waste of time LOL, switched to used Subwoofer Energy ESW-V10 with 300w amp and Carbon-fiber driver baby.
That's the Sub.

Welcome to the club. I think virtually everyone has done the same thing; tried to cheap out, found whatever it was we bought to be no good and then went and got what we should have in the first place. We make Visa and Mastercard very happy when that happens...

If you take yourself too seriously, expect me to do the exact opposite

Jamo J-112 available on ebay in dark apple and white finishes. This is a pretty darn good sub for $250. Cheapest I've seen in a long time. Roughly equivalent to the Klipsch R-112SW.

I see that Ebay has the Jamo J-110-DA listed for $200 and I am considering getting one to replace the little Polk PSW-111 I currently have. The Polk is an 8" sealed sub that's just too small for the room. It was free so I can't really complain but I want something with more presence when watching movies at low to medium volume. With music I like a slightly bass heavy mix for rock and jazz that's not boomy.
My usage is 70/30 music to movies. My room is 14 x 18 x 10 and has one door. My budget ceiling is $250 I'm sure a single 10" is too small for the room volume but space is a big issue. A compact box is a must because I live in a long term hospital.
Does the J-110 sound like a reasonable choice for my needs? Are there other compact subs I should consider?

For reference purposes, the Jamo J-110-DA is also available from a 3rd-party merchant at newegg.com for USD ~200 delivered:

That's the same seller as on ebay selling the J-112. I would certainly go the ebay/paypal route for added buyer protection. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jamo-J-110-D...AAAOSwmLlYB5Er

For a 10-12" for 100% music only in a 2.1 setup, could I do any better than the white Jamo 12" for $179 at Newegg? I'm not picky on color and my bookshelves are the Elac B5. Room is 13x11x8.

I believe that's the R-12sw that will be on sale, not R-112sw. Big difference in the two. R-12sw for $225 isn't really that special of a price. I believe frys.com has this on sale about once a month for less. Considering you can get the Jamo J-112 for $250 right now, I wouldn't be waiting for a lesser sub for nearly the same price after tax.

yep, i was mistaken. They only list the r-12sw on their website so must be that one.

Ordered the Klipsch r12sw for $225 (no tax or shipping fees).

I googled for hours last night, but couldn't find as much info as I would have liked... I'm hoping you guys could advise on whether it is "better" (I know, loaded term) than the PL-200 I was planning to get before the Klipsch went on sale.

I know it's not the same as the well regarded Sub 12, I'm just hoping I made a solid choice between the two (beyond corporate spec sheets and listed amp wattage)

Thanks!!

You could have bought the Jamo J-112 for $230, which is a much better sub. This thread has recently covered this. The R-12sw is not better than the PL-200. If you can cancel your order, I would strongly suggest you do so,

Bummer... I took the shot because it seemed like a solid sale, and I see the PL-200 for about $250 daily.

I saw the Jammo comment, and maybe two less-than-enthusiastic remarks about the Klipsch, but was hoping that they were made relative to the standard price. I didn't see anything in regards to "the Klipsch R12sw isn't even as good as..." type of comments. Definitely could have missed some, as I'm stuck viewing this site on my phone, and I'm no fan of the mobile version.

Are there any response curve graphs for the Klipsch? Haven't been able to find any yet.

Definitely interested in more info on why the Klipsch doesn't beat out the PL200. I'll return it if there's a clear advantage, for sure.

Again, you can get the Jamo J-112 on ebay for $230. Much better sub than the Klipsch R-12sw. J-112 is equal to the R-112sw. I would ditch the Klipsch if possible.

The nominal passband (frequency response) of the PL-200 (3+ octaves wide) is over 50% wider than that of the R-12SW (~2 octaves wide), and the amp of the PL-200 is more potent.

However, the output of the R-12SW may be more uniform/articulate, which may be more suitable for music reproduction.

How does the Jamo 112 do in sub 30HZ for the price? I'm not expecting much for the price but how is it? Also in general how does it compare say to other things I could buy for ~250$?

Price went back to $250. You snooze, you lose. J-112 has solid output down to the 23-24Hz range, then it loses steam. It has strong overall output. For the price there really isn't anything that competes other than maybe the Bic PL-200.

Yeah I was disappointed but as you you say.

So now that basically is my budget. I really can't go above 250. What is your or anyone's take on what would be a good pick. It's replacing a sub combo'd with a surround sound set that can only truly reach 35hz range then starts to die. It's a tiny ported 10 inch in a 16-28 ft room. Is a sealed room but massive. Makes lot of port noise. I know I need more sub but I'm a recent college grad and it's going to be a christmas gift from my parents so I need to find one to give and give them a name.

Would the PL 200 do better or they basically equivalent? Or something else I should consider?

EDIT: Sorry I missed that you said not much that probably can beat it. unless I hear anything crazy about the Bic PL 200 then I'll give them the link to the Jamo 112.

Polk PSW505 is $144 on Ebay. I cant post links due to not have 5 posts. Search "polk" on slickdeals.

What do you guys think? I have also had my eye on the Klipsch R-12SW. Is this price too good to pass up?

Unfortunately, the Klipsch r12sw shipped almost immediately, so I couldn't cancel... actually should arrive today.

Will give it a shot and see how it goes (and post my thoughts).
