It's not about playing it loud nor is it about overkill. In my opinion, instead, I find it's about flat room measurements, smoothing out the room's response and impact at all listening positions.

As to your man card, don't be so quick to punch holes in them for the older you get, the fewer cards you have to punch holes in. Covet the man card for as a man, it's all you've got and remember, it's those who don't hold a man card who are so quick to tell you how unimportant a man card is.

+1, same here my room is large so I have to get the power to match the size. My goal is to have my setup similar or better than an actual theater experience but at home. Where I live they have the smallest cheapest theaters, that was part of my reason. They suck so bad here its not even worth going but now i wanna bring the movies to life so i can enjoy them, so far its payed off. HT projects are fun, and some cases you need good power to make it happen. biggrin.gif

There's no way we'd go back to movie theaters.

Price, quality, inconvenience, no way as we're Home Theater all the way.

Not to mention (at least for me and my dad) other people in the theater can easily ruin the experience.

I mean really....how hard is it to not say anything for 1-2 hours?

With the price of an 80" flat screen, being what it is at Costco, I've informed the wife that when the 60" screen takes a dump, the next screen is going be an 80" screen. Currently they're about $3,000.00 - $4,000.00. I figure by the time our 60" dies, the 80" will be about $2,500.00.

What can I say, big screens were made for sports. biggrin.gif

Ima be completely honest, ive seen 3d showings many times and was never impressed. When i got the 80in sharp aqous quattron I noticed the screen came calibrated very nice and so clear. When I bought a bunch of 3d bluerays I was skeptical, I tried avatar 3d first and I was blown away!! The 3d is amazing, I mean theres scenes where you will jump back from things looking like theyre coming at you. Needless to say life of Pi was awesome, jurassic park 3d, brave, ect i just kept buying 3d bluerays and im impressed and hands down would say with the right setup 3d can be amazing. Buying a larger led screen helped make it stand out more and feel more realistic.

Thanks!

I've seen 3D once. Golf. And all I could say, Golf was made for 3D. Based on what you posted, it reads like 3D will be an excellent next investment. This, of course, after all the other things on the "To Buy" list are purchased.

I can only imagine what Basketball, Football and Hockey will be like.

Honestly I just use the 3d for blueray movies so im not sure about how sports work with it. The sharp uses these glasses that you charge via usb port and last for a while before you have to charge em again. With the right tv, good 3d blueray player, and good quality hdmi cable you can really enjoy 3d mode. I use all monser cables, they work just fine. I have my screen size large and my seats a little close so that when I do watch 3d stuff its even more intense. Yeah i really didnt care for 3d but with the rite setup its actually awesome!biggrin.gif
The downside is that you usually pay $30 or more for a new release movie so I usually only buy movies in 3d that I know are visually appealing.

We still goto the movies, mostly for special events. My daughter is into Harry Potter and Percy Jackson etc.. So when these special movies come to the theaters, we go. Me and the wife also catch a flick and dinner in the winter when were bored. When I finish my theater, well that will all probably change.

I may be talking out of place here, certainly my perspective, but I believe that blu ray sales/digital downloads (iTunes) are better than ever and they are becoming a driving force in overall movie sales. It just seems that they run the movies in the theaters and grab what they can and then right to blu ray/digital downloads. So I don't believe that industry is really hurting, it is really up to the theaters to find a way to get people in the seats and remain profitable, Dolby Atmos is a step in the right direction. It is hard for us guys to believe, but not everybody has a movie theater in their home. People are still going to goto the movies. Personally, I love IMax and I love the fact that it is in the Tropicana Hotel Casino in Atlantic City. Nothing like a movie at Imax and not to mention dinner at Carmines and some poker and blackjack down in the Casino afterwards wink.gif

I agree with you, im just saying that for the HT fanatics that have a nice setup or for anyone else that gets their setup to a certain point, ull actually enjoy movies better than going out, with the exception if an Imax as they are pretty decent. Where I live the theaters are horrible and I love movies so that was my reasoning. One thing I noticed also that if you wait for some releases to come out on blueray, sometimes theyll have up to an hour or more of extra scenes so that is pretty cool. Like I think I saw Avatar has an edition thats 3 hours and 20 min. I like the digital apps like vudu. You can rent new releases from your xbox and you can play them in sd, hd, or hdx format, offcourse I choose hdx since its very good quality. Sometimes I miss goin out to the movies but theres just no good theaters in my city.

Well, actually, I have what I call a Home Theater in the living room as opposed to what I call a "Movie Palace."

Also, I have upgraded my expectations from a 60" screen to an 80" screen and when manufactures come up with an affordable 120" flat screen, me and the wife are going have a serious disagreement.

(What the heck to you mean that you don't want a ten foot television screen in your old school living room? I don't understand.)

In my younger days, literally, I bought her diamonds, emeralds and pearls. Small (not something Elizabeth Taylor would have noticed or gotten excited about), but still, nothing but the best as the best, to a blue collar worker, is uber expensive. I even went so far as to design and create some special, just for her, jewelery. Later, in my older days, I bought her the house she fell in love with. Today, I shepherd the maintenance of our cars, reseed the lawn, polish and hand rub the hood of her car. All I'm wanting out of the deal is a ten foot LCD screen so we can watch the Giants lose another game.

We'll start with an 80" and go from there.

LOL. biggrin.gif

So you used to be a pirate rite? biggrin.gif I guess from a woman's point of view, having a screen that NASA could see might seem senseless, but its just awesome! Tell her you can keep the 60in, you can mount it for her in the bathroom or the bedroom for her. Tell her that the way things are nowadays who knows how long we'll all be here and that it would suck if the world ended and you never got to finish your man cave mad.gif
