I have a single XV15 in the right front corner behind the RF main speaker and could fit a 2nd one behind the LF main. Is there a minimun distance between subs to avoid cancellation or other problems?

There's not really an issue with caneling out with placing subs too close... Depending how close the subs are they may couple and act as 1 sub (which would gain you 6db but really wouldn't smooth out bass resp thru out the room). FYI I have my subs both on the front wall and I have no complaints about the sound or bass resp. But I have never measured with a software program like REW.

What are the options for "eq'ing" a subwoofer or subwoofers?  Does it require an amp or receiver with certain capability?  An external equalizer of some sort? Just wondering as my AVR does not seem to have any subwoofer adjustment abiility

One of the easiest ways is to buy a receiver that has Audyssey XT or XT32. It is an automated room correction program that does a great job of EQing all speakers, including the sub. You can find Audyssey XT or XT32 in Denon, Onkyo, Marantz receivers and maybe a brand or two that I didn't list. XT is their "silver" version, while XT32 is their flagship version. I would avoid any receiver that doesn't have at least the "silver" Audyssey XT version as there are lesser versions of Audyssey available but they don't do the job near as well as XT or XT32.

I've got a Dayton UMM-6 USB microphone, and I will be installing REW in my wife's laptop. I've never tried this before so we will see how it goes eek.gif

Just saying, expect a bit of a frustrating learning curve as setup is not intuitive but once up and running, it's all point-n-click.

Use the hdmi output on the laptop to avr if it has that option...soooo much nicer then dealing with soundcards. Also be sure to match rew to the umm-6 mic with a spl meter and you will be golden.

What happens when one HDMI's over to the AVR. Do you end up bypassing the soundcard and use the DAC onboard the AVR like using a USB port?

I thought just by having the calibrated Dayton UMM-6 USB microphone from Cross-Spectrum would be enough to calibrate my set up? Wouldn't the Dayton UMM-6 USB microphone show the same information as the SPL meter anyway in graph form?

No...Rew does not sync correctly with the UMM-6. While the UMM-6 comes with a calibration file, you still need a spl meter to calibrate rew to the mic or your levels will be off about 20db. Its not that difficult...I can make a short video if need be. Supposedly the UMIK-1 does not have this issue, but I have not verified this.

Tht would be awesome. I'm off Tuesday and Wednesday. So I want to try to do this by then. I'm looking at the SPL meters but I don't know which on to buy.

Does REW also calculate regular speakers besides subwoofers?

If so can anyone suggest what to pickup that will get me started?

Also can I use a tower pc with a hdmi out of a gtx 760?

Check out the REW thread: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1449924/simplified-rew-setup-and-use-usb-mic-hdmi-connection-including-measurement-techniques-and-how-to-interpret-graphs and look for AustinJerry's invaluable step by step guide to getting started, measuring and interpreting REW graphs

If your laptop has an HDMI then you can access all speakers via the AVR, I believe. REW allows you to see full range and gives you readouts on other speakers too! smile.gif

Just got a new umm-6 mic and installed rew. The umm-6 no longer requires manual calibration with an spl meter. Rew now auto recognizes it and asks for the cal file. It actually gives me a message if I click on calibrate in the spl meter tab. It won't let me manually calibrate it. They must have recently updated it to be auto recognized just like the umik-1 mic. The first line in the calibration file has sensitivity information.

I'm a little bit confused. So the calibrated USB mic can only be used to calibrate a subwoofer only? Or can it do both speakers and subs?

First chart XV-15 - three seats on the couch seat #1 is closest to the front door... Followed by seat #2 and #3 - audyssey off

Same seats #1-3 audyssey on

I thought I was missing mid-bass slam and now I see why!! Below are pictures of my set-up and seating area - placement areas are a bit limited due to the size of the room 14x17.

Not sure if there is anything I can do to help with the dip between 50-70hz and the difference between seating positions other than getting an additional xv-15 and a receiver with xt32. I currently have a denon avr 591 with basic audyssey. Let me know what you guys think!!

Thanks.

With a SPL meter its nice to run the REW level test tones before you start and you can use the SPL meter to get the volume to the db level you want to test at. For example, when i run the test level I use my SPL meter to match a certain volume such as 80dbs. After that I put it away and use the mic to make my charts. This way when I see my charts I can see how flat my room is and also how much room gain im getting and where. If i set it to 80dbs and part of my graph at 40hz shows 65dbs, then im losing output there. If at 60hz im reading 95dbs then im getting an additional 15dbs gain at that frequency.
