I think you're right, take a look at the surround on the 18" driver for the Triax-18. It doesn't look all the big so I'm guessing give up a little excursion to save some weight and use a 18" for surface area.

Ray, do you think they will still get that slam factor with the 18"s that the 15"s give with the heavier driver? The 15s were at least 45+ pounds a piece, I remember
Cheers Jeff

I would think so, with the bigger surface area the 18's wouldn't have to work as hard.

I'll have to come over and check them out when you get them

Hey Jeffery could you at least get the subs setup and run REW this time around?

Also Tom mentioned the difference is subtle...

I would not be surprised if Tom is "downplaying" the "subtle" difference.

God, the old days. They were the most fun in a LOT of ways. We would get 12 drivers at a time from FRC(?) all shipped fedex ground. Amps from some place called Something something Akustics? Like 230 watts? I think I still have a shelf full of those in the home shop. I remember now...RCM Akustics!

I think the first 6(?) months was passive only. But we never really sold much until the powered models came out. Of course we had some of the competition insisting the *PC* models would never last because the amp mount compromised the cylinder integrity. Um.....15 years later?

I remember the first two subs(16-46s) we shipped got to the guy in pieces. We had no idea how to properly pack anything. God that was disappointing. Serial number 1 and 2! I can't remember his name but I do remember they were going into his bedroom and he was VERY cool about the damage.

I swear I could write a book FILLED with anecdotes about stuff like this.

haha...i bought the baby 25-31 cs at first then quickly upgraded to the 20-36cs+ that was tunable to 16hz

I remember seeing people with 2 of them (duals was not really a common thing nor known to smooth response) and thinking they were absolute mad!

mind you I was still living with my parents in a 11x11 bedroom lol and it was corner loaded nearfield....so the response must have been sweet!

Cheers Jeff
Three primary reasons for the revision.

1)We are now able to source the Triax drivers from Eminence. So we have a very reliable logistics chain with significantly shorter lead times.

2)Weight savings as the new 18 driver motors don't need significant amounts of "steel" to be able to move significant amounts of air. Factor in the much larger cut-outs on three baffles of the enclosure and some other tweaks and we have the weight down to the 158 range(no grills). This should be a bit easier to move into place for our customers.

3)Subtle performance benefits

So the overall enclosure size for the Triax will stay exactly the same?

It will have to grow for the T-21 though

Also, still awaiting the first PSA 15" cylinder

I bought one of the early 20-39 subs with a Samson S700 and then upgraded to a pair of 20-39 pluses as soon as they became available, driven by a Samson S1000. Subs number 35 & 36 IIRC. I still have them and they are still going strong.

That's a lot more surface area, but those high excursion 15's will still move a lot of air too! Sure it's a lot more surface area but if it has half the xmax you can see why Tom said anyone with an original Triax shouldn't think the new will have way more performance.

I'm curious to find out which Eminence driver the Triax-18 will be using, I wonder if it'll be like the Eminence driver used by Chase/Chane in their subs?

Billy my friend I hear you brother. I told the wife I might be going down to PSA to bring the subs I have now back and trade them for two bigger ones, she just looked at me and said dead serious, "don't ask me to help you move them" end quote. Amazing woman indeed. I really don't think I can pass this opportunity up, that was always my intention was to have dual Triaxs, if they sound as good as the 1st generation I will be thrilled. The 15"s were real beasts. Billy since I have your Blessings and the misses with that response, why not
