Change the level to -3dBSF instead of -12 when measuring and/or reduce mic volume in window. The Umm6 mic will be a few db off when its volume is reduced in window. Check Jerry's guide for the off db level. Include the distortion graph while you at it. Make sure to up your LFE to 250hz and run sweeps from 5-250hz.

I have two XS30se's and below you'll find my REW results -room is around 4-5k cubic ft. This may or may not be a good indicator of what they'd do in Alan's room, but should give you a rough idea of what they're capable of. Note I set the test tone reference to 75dB so my overall output in the graph is lower, rest assured I have plenty of headroom above what the graph shows.

Top line is +3 dB's hot on the sub, bottom is how Audyssey would have kept it. Graph has 1/12 octave smoothing.

I had the level at -3db and the MV at 0 and REW complained at me. I'll have to try the mic lvl trick tomorrow.

Should I measure just the LFE while doing this (CH4)?

Calibrate the UMM-6 at a higher level in REW. Somewhere around -10 should work. After I calibrate my mic at that level REW says I have enough headroom for a 140db sweep.

Lowell,

I can't believe you don't know about the MiniDSP yet....it's a very useful tool, especially if you use REW.

It will allow you to use EQ (slick interface with REW), delay and gain for up to 4 individual subs (2x4 version). It won't replace XT32 but it can be a great compliment if XT32 can't solve all your issues.

Check this thread.

And here's the MiniDSP site.

Sweet! That sounds like the easiest way to go about it....but wouldn't the db level be off then?? I suppose you just subtract the 10db then? But wouldn't you end up at the same place?

You do not subtract anything...open up rew, click calibrate, pink noise should play, turn the MV up to -10, place the spl meter next to the mic, make sure they match, click calibrate. Should give you more headroom to work with...at least it does on my version of rew.

Ahhh...I remember now. We've been through this before and the newer versions of REW don't allow you to do that....I'll give it a shot tomorrow though.

Glad to hear the T-18's have the extra headroom you needed. If I recall sound quality was never a issue anyway correct?

Your graph looks pretty good to me red. The green and yellow line anyway. Are you happy with the sound?

It sounds good I guess but I have nothing to compare it too. I was expecting a little better extension. I don't like how it drops off like a rock off a cliff as soon as it passes 20 Hz. I wish I knew how to get that dip out or what is causing it. My room is so open I dont know if room treatments would do anything.

Not sure I would not worry about it...enjoy your subs and do not obsess over graphs. Your subs will very rarely play anything below 20hz anyways, unless you keep a demo disk on hand or you play bass music that have a lot of sub 20hz content.

Looks like your room offers little roo. gain. You could probably boost the 20hz area 2-3 db with a mini dsp to flatten out the low end but I probably leave it be if you do not want to lose any mid upper bass headroom.
