@Toe , from reading the AH reviews from Gene D he says the ceiling and the modules are a night and day difference, the cielng speakers blow away the modules, he has actual experience with both.

@Randy , you're right about 5.1 (2) and 7.1(2), the extra back two channels don't do much for me either. I may have to try Toe's reco and go with front wides as I have a pair I could use and see what I think. The 210s being a direct radiating speaker it might add something, what I don't know but Toe likes them.

@Alan , I'm in the same camp as you and I think I'm going to hold off on the Atmos and get XT32 Sub EQ for sure, especially last years models could be had for a lot less.

I have a 3D capable TV and it's supposed to be pretty good at that and I have never used or tried it, glasses are still in the boxes.
Cheers Jeff

Just a FYI, you don't have to put in the ceiling speakers, another option is the speaker modules that you can place on top of your L and R speakers, they fire up at an angle and reflect off the ceiling. I have read that they work pretty well. But I have no first hand experience.

The more I contemplate it, the more options I realize there are. You can really make your own "Atmos enabled speakers" it's all about the angles for reflection. There are also ceiling mount of satellites as options.

I agree, unless there is some major announcement by Dolby at CES, something like "we have 50 movies coming out in Atmos this year on Bluray", I am going to have to wait. Even then, first gen Atmos receivers are pretty much have 1 or 2 year life spans as far as future proofing.

I was thinking of the same thing. Another VHS vs Beta or BR vs HD-DVD war. Everytime I turn on my Marantz I get this message asking me to upgrade to Auro3D. Which isn't a free upgrade. I click "Ignore" and it still keeps popping up every time I turn on the Preamp. There seems to be quite a few movies out for it. But Im not going to get caught again investing in the wrong format. I have 2 HD-DVD players that I paid over $500 each that or just DVD players now. I learned my lesson. lol

Also I would like to ad that the speaker placement of Auro 3D and Dolby Atmos is not the same. I read the Auro had a better layout. But that was one persons opinion that reviewed it. But something to think about if you are planning on installing ceiling speakers.

not to get too far off topic,

but Atmos isnt a format war...its the same thing as DTS:NEO and Dolby PLIIx.

Also I have sait it a ton of times...if they never came out with another BR with Atmos the upgrade is worth it just for DSU. Its so much more immersive, and way bigger of an upgrade than going from 5.1 to 7.1

I did it easily by adding quintetes to the ceiling...but I have heard very good things about upfiring speakers (the one review was for the onkyo modules which are terrible)...if your AVR already has it I highly recommend tryin it out or finding a place to demo it (BB is NOT a good option) before coutning it out.

As far as Auro3d goes...there are ZERO movies released for HT with it...and from what I understand it is more for music..but the results have been positive so far for ITS upmixing. And you CAN use the same speaker layouts but there are some compromises...I am sure there will be a firmawrae update son to allow for the same speaker layouts to be used...but either way you will gain a TON by going to 3d audio...much biger than 3d video, or 4k for that matter...its THAT good

Thanks for correcting me. I suppose its not a format war, but it is a sound stage war to me. What's more important, is they both have different speaker layout recommendation. So with modules, its not a big deal, but if someone was going all out and placing ceiling speakers, it may be. That was my point to let someone know so they would be informed to do there own homework and decide what they want to do. Set up for one or the other, or try to find a happy medium for both.

Also, I only claimed about the movies because of the website here! http://www.auro-3d.com/consumer/movies/ I didn't open each movie up and look at the detail. I just saw them under the Auro3D movie listing and assumed they were all movies for Auro 3D. Are these not Auro3D movies? And is 11.1 different than 3D?

This article calls it a format war. And gives some good information and also shows the difference in speaker layout.

Anyway, all anyone has to do is google Auro3D vs Dolby Atmos and you can find a ton of material to read.

Brian, I have heard DSU is a great enhancement, but if Atmos doesn't stick, how many generations will receivers continue to have DSU as an option on future receivers? I have thought about putting Def Tech PM800s or 1000s on the ceiling, but not sure if the dispersion will be good enough. Also, the Dolby rep told me there designs are for monopole speakers. So I am debating whether to change out my SR8080s and lower them. What are you using for surrounds and how high off the ground are they.

Also, what are the 3 more announced Blurays with Atmos?

Lowell

If I remember you were doing that with MiniDSP. Was it for clipping issues. REW tells me I am clipping at higher volumes, will a Y-splitter help that.
