I made a type-o in my last post, I meant to put a question mark after discreet channels for sound. Thanks guys, I just want to be sure I have this down correctly. Your explanations seem to be pretty straight forward and informative.

Dolby Digital (and DTS) also encodes discrete streams for the 6 channels. It's the original Dolby Surround format which was had 4 channel matrixed into stereo streams. Audio on DVD is most of the time Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 and those formats are not lossless, they're lossy. However, lossy doesn't necessarily mean bad. You can have compressed audio that is virtually indistinguishable from the uncompressed version. It all depends on the level of compression, and I guess this is variable in a DD track.

As for dynamic range, I'll have to check the numbers but I think both Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio have a greater dynamic range than Dolby Digital and DTS.

I have to argue with the above. Anything that takes away from the originally recorded material, is bad. Period. Foot down. Not moving on this point.

I'll freely acknowledge that I'm applying a musical standard to the dynamics of a movie sound track. And I'll freely acknowledge these venues have totally different recorded purposes but in the case of audio, my foot is down and it ain't moving, more is better.

(and in all fairness, no, I haven't done a comparative critical listening session of "Blackhawk Down" so no, I cannot unequivocally state that there's a difference)

What I have done is compare Blu-ray output to Comcast provided content and without question, the Blu-ray content is much more pleasurable to the ears and I get on average, 6dB more SPL when a sound meter is employed to measure output at similar MCV levels.

(and for Christmas, I'd like an Emotiva, XPA-5 amplifier and I'd like a PSA, XS30 subwoofer with Cordovan Cherry veneer and I'd like a ........)

Ok for interested readers, please go read the DTS, Dolby Digital, Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio Wikipedia pages smile.gif

Here's the situation.

  • Dolby Digital (aka AC-3) supports up to 5.1 discrete channels lossy compressed at 16bit/48kHz with a max bitrate of 448 kbps on DVDs and 640 kbps on BDs.
  • DTS-ES supports up to 6.1 matrixed channels at 16bit/48kHz at a max bitrate of 1.5 Mbps, but most often reduced to 754 kbps on DVD.
  • Dolby True HD supports up to 7.1 discrete channels lossless-compressed at 24bit/96kHz with a max bitrate of 18 Mbps. However on BDs, an AC-3 track must also be provided.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio supports up to 7.1 discrete channels lossless-compressed at 24bit/96kHz with a max bitrate of 24.5 Mbps, or alternatively up to 5.1 channels at 24bit/192kHz for the same bitrate.

EDIT: Note that the DTS-HD limitations are for BD media only. The format actually can include an arbitrary number of channels.

Actually I just remembered that when I watched Cloverfield the other night, my yamaha switched to decoder off mode...so it was utilizing the source and bypassing the avr. not sure if that makes any difference.

My experience, used Blu-ray disks are in "GREAT" shape. I've never found as much as a piece of dust or an offending fingerprint. There shouldn't be anything a micro-fiber cloth isn't able to deal with.

Considering the price of a first run Blu-ray disk, used Blu-rays are less then a single matinee theater ticket and microwave popcorn is $0.25 a bag.....and you get to drink beer......well, actually ale or lager.

BD's coating is quite resistant -- more so than DVDs. However BD players can easily skip if the disk is dirty, so wipe them clean before use.

Avatar is a classic. Battle LA is a shooting fest. You'll feel subsonics, rumbles, booms, blams, and even a greater variety of pops. Don't think to much though during your listening session smile.gif. Note that Pulse is considered to be almost unwatchable (never watched it myself). This is the problem for me: it seems that most movies featuring great bass are mediocre. That's why Superleo's and Jindrak's demo discs are awesome. You should give it a try.

Not sure what this means... if this means the PS3 was doing the decoding and your receiver got PCM, then it's all right. I have an older PS3 model that can't even bitstream HD audio, so I'm forced to let the PS3 decode it and send the decoded PCM streams to the receiver. It sounds just the same smile.gif

Let's see what the dictionary has to say on this matter......"Envy."

"a. A feeling of discontent and resentment aroused by and in conjunction with desire for the possessions or qualities of another."

Yup. I envy you. tongue.gif

That's a tremendous system that you are going to have in just a couple of days!!!

If you are happy with the sound of your new speaker, then your jaw will hit the floor after your 929 calibrates the new sub.

Yes, I'm expecting a full report from you!!!!

Can’t go wrong with the flight of the phoenix, what a great movie imo and the sound is so well put together. I need to fix the blu-ray part of my PS3 due to it sacked out on me. Everything else works fine. It’s hard to nail the drive down since there is so much to pick from under the same serial number? Anyway I do miss it/BR at times though.

Honestly man. The A9' s pump out quite a bit of bass even without an amp. My wife has asked a few time if I really need a sub. I pretend to not hear her.. Lol

I should be receiving my XV15 tomorrow but want to ask a question regarding placement. How far away from the wall should I place the Subwoofer, and laterally from the front speaker I am placing it next to? Thank you in advance for your replies.

Mine are about 4 inches from the wall. That is about as close as I can actually get them due to the power and RCA cables.
