Good question.....I have no clue what percentage of the pre orders were wood veneer. At $200 I found it very reasonable to get a more furniture like finish; mine will be very visible in the living room so it was important to me that we like how it looks.

Tom, if you read this it would be interesting to know what percent of the pre orders were in wood veneer. wink.gif

I believe this is the article you are referring to:
http://www.data-bass.com/data?page=content&id=77

Op, I know the article says it doesn't make a difference regarding orientation, but it did to my untrained ears. I have the XS30 near field. Originally, I had the unit in the corner, next to my MLP with the amp facing the corner and the opposed drivers firing into the walls. I found that I liked the sound better when I brought it away from the corner a few inches and put the sub parallel to one of the walls, so one driver fires into the couch and the other straight into the wall. I have no measurements to back this up, just thought it sounded a little better in MY listening environment.

does not suprise me...every room is different so its best to exhaust all placement options to find the sweet spot just like you did!!

Hu! I have measured differences and have noticed others measure differences with the driver facing the wall as apposed to in the room. I wont make a blanket statement, but in a very leaky room I used to be in that was the case. Not sure as to the why of it though?

A suggestion would be to reread the question. The reason I mention this, the question was asking about the orientation of the speakers located in the XS30 cabinet (front-to-back vs side-to-side) as opposed to front firing vs down firing subwoofer drivers. confused.gif

falzpozitive asked: "...but I was wondering if anyone has actually measured the responses with these speakers facing forward/back vs side to side and if there was any difference."

He was asking about the XS30 subwoofer.

I suggest YOU actually read the article:

"We placed the subwoofers in the back corner of a 4000cu ft room and positioned three microphones around the room, roughly 4 to 6 meters from the subwoofer. The subwoofers’ responses were then measured at 45 degree points of rotation, resulting in eight measurements for the front firing Rythmik and four for the Empire (its dual opposed design makes four of the orientations redundant). We repeated this for each sub at each of the three microphone positions.

The Empire has a very uniform output at all three listening positions regardless of its own orientation.
The results of those measurements are shown on the right. You can immediately notice that the Empire has a very uniform output at all three listening positions regardless of its own orientation. The Rythmik has much larger variations in response depending upon its orientation."

I tried to amend my comments but the edit feature isn't working for that post and I tried to edit the comments many times. The edit feature is working with this post. Forgive my failure to make my point more clear. The point was to address the issue regarding front/back firing vs down firing.

I did find this comment in the linked article more to my personal experience.

Quote:
Test Results

The results for the orientation tests are shown on the right. You can see that from turning either the Rythmik or ED subs 90 degrees from the microphone causes a rather substantial drop in recorded output.

My experience was with single driver subs vs dual driver subs. I found that simply turning the subwoofer around, would noticeably impact measurements but again, this was a single driver vs dual opposing drivers.

I found this comment to be very revealing, well actually condemning but to me, that's a bit aggrandizing.

Quote:
Why Compensate?

No matter how you place yourself or a microphone relative to a dual opposed subwoofer at a fixed distance outdoors away from boundaries, you will not be able to get an output level as high as if the two drivers of the same subwoofer were both facing directly at you or the microphone. So why should a dual opposed subwoofer receive compensation? Because of the boundaries and objects in a typical room. If a dual opposed subwoofer were to somehow translate its less focused output from separated radiation points into more even room coverage or to leverage better average room gain to the listening positions such that it recovers the output lost to a single point outdoor or anechoic measurement, then it would make sense to add compensation. If it does not translate in room then it would not make sense to add it.

Descriptively, it really does get a bit mushy at this point when one has a driver radiating into the room and another driver radiating to the back wall, into a corner and begs the question, which is the better choice; forward facing duals, such as the sealed Rythmik F25 and the vented PSA XV30f or sealed opposing such as the PSA XS30 or dual down firing vented subwoofers such as the XV30?

Next step would be to purchase a umm-6 mic and download REW to measure your room response. Peaks in the FR can cause a boomy response.

Unfortunately, your above seems to be the only realistic answer.

For most, the biggest subwoofer impediment is a tossup between budget and aesthetics with room smoothing issues coming in a close second. Then one has to deal with issues surrounding sealed vs vented. I'm a sealed kinda guy but much to my dismay, the room and aesthetics cry out for vented. In the end, I find myself caught up in a rerun of Abbott and Costello's; "Who's On First."

What can I say.....reality bites.

Not bad at all!!! You might try to eq that slight dip in the 45hz area a bit but it might not even be noticeable.

Just a quick thought regarding the XV15: I can't believe how much music I was missing with my previous Cadence CSX-12 II sub. I'm not talking about 0db ear pounding SPL, but rather -35db "depth".......Wow smile.gif

Yea the XV15 is ALOT of sub for 799.00. They do not need to be turned up much to enjoy deep powerful bass! Glad to hear you are enjoying yours!!
