FYI,

I have an open area where living, dinning & kitchen are with under 3K cubic feet.

I was going to go with HSU VTF-3 but then found the SVS PB12-Plus.

A bit of hard time deciding between the both. My primary usage will be movies.

Note: I would probably prefer sealed subs either the SB13-Plus or the HSU ULS 15 due to smaller sizes but my understanding are that ported subs are better ?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I know people that have both and both are extemely satisfied.

There is a $500 price delta between these two units. For me, I would purchase the SVS. They have an exemplary reputation and the product just plain performs.

I wish I had known about SVS when I was purchasing my Sub. I have a Def Tech TL-15+ and I have never wanted more output and my media room >6K cubic feet.

With that said, I believe the SVS will go lower at a higher output level, but you pay for it - though a very reasonable price.

Maybe two (2) HSU subs would be better than one SVS. Someone with more knowledge that me could cover that topic.

If I was in your position I would wait until the Outlaw LFM-1EX goes on sale again for $550 delivered and buy 2 of them (for less than the price of one PB-12 Plus).

Yes, I am leaning towards the SVS... but I'm a bit concerned with the sizes of these ported subs... I can already imagine my wife complaining...

Yes, I also thought about 2 subs... but due to space limitation... that's out of the question for now

The better comparison, it seems to me, would be the PB12-Plus and the VTF-15H. If you can only get away with one sub (with the wife), save a little money over the PB12-Plus and get the VTF-15H. It has more output than the ULS 15.

Yes, I suppose if I'm considering the SVS PB12 then I should also consider the VTF 15. So are you saying that VTF 15 is better than SB12 ?

Below are the sub dimensions:

21.5"(h) x 17.0"(w) x 25.0"(d) VTF-3 MK4 (90 lbs)
25.0"(h) x 18.0"(w) x 26.0"(d) VTF-15H (123 lbs)
22.0"(h) x 19.75"(w) x 25-1/8” (d) PB12-Plus (127 lbs)

The height for the VTF-15H is tremendous... Does anyone use their subs as an end table ?

Edit:
I do want the best sub I can get but maybe I should start to consider the below:

18.875"(h) x 18"(w) x 19.25"(d) ULS 15
17-7/8"(h) x 17-3/8(w) x 17-3/8" (d) SB13-Plus

The PB12nsd is more comparable to the VTF3-mk4 while the Plus is comparable to the VTF15

I two like the idea of dual Outlaw LFM-1 EX's (if you don't plan to add another large sub later) but if you don't want to wait for a sale, a pair of Rythmik FV12's may also be worth a look

Between the VTF3 and the PB12 Plus, go for the PB12 Plus, there is a reason it is so much more expensive. The VTF15h is like a compromise between the two, it has the output of a PB12 Plus, but not the deep frequency extension, whereas the VTF3 has similar deep frequency extension, but not quite the output of either. To be honest though, I think you'll be happy with any of them, they are all very good subs.

VTF15 is really out of the question... just too big.

I really do like the PB12 Plus and again that's where I'm leaning towards...

Go with the SVS. It's output at 20hz is incredible.

This maybe a silliy question but do movies generally go down to 20hz ?

Lets just say that having the opportunity to go to 20hz when it's required and doing so with force is better than not getting to 20hz at all.

Well I finally made the plunge and ordered a PB12-Plus. I can already hear my wife telling me to return this sub due to the size but once it's here it's not going back

I know it makes no difference but also ordered an XLR cable, I just preferr an XLR vs RCA connection. Plus it only cost $16 plus shipping.

Update:

OK, I got the PB12-Plus in and it is huge.

No complaints on my side but I'm just getting too much grief from wife due to its size. I have gotten an ultimatum... either the sub goes or she goes... lol

She is being sarcastic but unfortunately, It will be likely that I will need to return this sub and get possibly the SVS SB13-Plus instead.

The problem is that I no longer have original packaging and I will get charged by SVS for a box and delivery... and then shipping costs back to them... Probably looking at about $350 just to return sub.

I thought about selling on Audiogon for local pickup and save on shipping costs but probably not worth it.

That's a shame. Is the SB-13 THAT much smaller? You're right you may be better off attempting to sell on the 'gon or craiglist. How long do you have to return it?

I do have 45 days to return sub... I'm located in NYC area, I didn't think it was worth it... but I do have some time... so I may first attempt to sell either on 'gon or craiglist.

Have you tried setting it as an "end table"? It looks less imposing this way.

Yes, I've already made this suggestion... Replacing one of my end tables was a good suggestion I had already made but its a no go.

Although I agree that sub is too big for my living room, maybe with time my wife would accept it but I highly doubt it.

You jumped in size quite a bit from the ASW10CM. But big 12" ported subs do look smaller once you get used to them.

In the meantime, try demoing some of the 4 1/2 or 5 star movies from The New Master List of BASS in Movies with Frequency Charts. Maybe you'll both agree that the PB-12 Plus significantly improves the HT experience over your ASW10CM. That might get you part of the way out of the dog house

LOL, You got that right.

My ASW10CM is a mini sub compared to the 12" ported sub.

It's really not a question about how much better it sounds... I played a movies yesterday... Definitely a much improvement over the ASW10CM its just the space.

It's true over time, you do get used to the size so I'm hoping for this to happen but in reality I doubt it will happen. I still have a couple of weeks before I need to return... so lets see

Dude, grow a pair and tell her it's something you've worked for and deserve. It's your house too. I have a wife who isn't crazy about audio equipment but she knows that it's a passion I have and it makes me happy. I hate her spending money on worthless Coach purses but I know it makes her happy so I don't give her any guff about it. I'm rooting for ya!
