Nothing like holiday deals to you jumping into some new AV equipment.

I am not particularly well versed in the AV dept. I get lost in a lot of the jargon, but I understand when people talk about value vs. performance.

So it started with woot.com having the Pioneer VSX-1021-K on sale for about 1/2 retail. And cnet as well as many other online reviewers giving HIGH recommendations for for the Pioneer SP-PK21BS bundle. Then best buy having a (what I assume) a great deal on a similar bundle. A pair of floor stander Pioneer SP-FS51-LR, a pair of bookshelf Pioneer SP-BS21-LR, and a Pioneer SP-C21 center at 284.97. It's missing sub, and I stumble on someone's off hand comment about lava subs in another thread.

My room is about 8x12, I haven't measured and I'm in Japan and I don't want to bother asking my wife to do it. I already have the AVR, but no speakers.

Would a lava sub be a good addition or would I be better served by the complementing Pioneer SW-8? 8" or 10"?

And would the above set up be good for a beginner/casual/budget minded set up?

I'm an Iraq/Afghan Marine vet thats been blown up a few times and don't hear so well anymore so I don't need to be able to hear the resonation of a pin dropping. I just want to hear a movie and think "H*LL YEAH!"

P.S. Saw the "Want advice on what sub to purchase? Please read this before posting..." after writing this so I'll sum it all up on the bottom.

1. Your budget - max $250

2. Size requirements/limits - none

3. Room dimensions - 8x12, assume I'm right

4. Primary uses - Casual: TV/movie watching, music, gaming (70%, 20%, 10%)

5. Listening habits - Casual, I got kids including a 4 month old, and they dont listen well already. Occasional drunken party gaming (rock band/dance central) where it can get loud but by no means Man-O-War record setting status.

6. Appearance requirements - none

7. Timeframe - none

Sorry to thread-jack you, but I want to keep track of the replies since we have similar budgets and room sizes. I'm eyeing a Lava myself since shipping to Canada kills all the other deals ongoing right now (such as the Emotiva Ultra 12 sale). They seem like good value for the cost, despite being a fairly new offering.

I have never failed. I just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

Check the budget subwoofers thread. There's probably several different options that could work for you.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite

Agreed with the Emotiva Ultra 12. Right now I consider this is the best budget sub for $329 with free shipping to USA. This sub is not rated as a budget sub; but better than budget subs but right now is on clearance.

You might also look at the Polk PSW505 on sale at Amazon.

Lava owner here. Have dual 12 inch subs for my HT. Each was close to $275 with the AVS member discount. Totally happy with my purchase, have zero complaints, and would purchase again in a second.

The bad stuff about the Polk subwoofer does NOT apply to the PSW505 or the dsw series subwoofers. The polk in your small room will easily fill the room and get bass response down to 25hz to the -3db roll off.

What he means is you will be able to play 25hz sounds pretty well. The Lava may say it can go as low as listed but I believe it rolls of around 35-40hz? (confirm?)

No subwoofer I've heard has been able to produce the bass I've experienced in the Corps!

Must..stop...buying...every bluray release...

Awesome, thanks for the recommendation. My wife authorized the emotiva actually. Is it worlds of difference from the psw505 and would it really matter considering the budget speakers I have and myAVR?

Also whats the deal with the emotiva connection? would I have to buy additional gear other then wire to connect it to my avr?

Also look at the Energy s10.3, that's the one I have. The Mirage Omni S10 is simliar and what the Lava tries to compare itself with.

I can confirm that my lava sub really came alive when I played the 24hz test tone downloaded from somewhere on AVS. Below 20 it was a dud.

im digging the energy's. this deal just came up on newegg too. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882269022 its not for me, but thought someone may find it useful

So since my wife gave the thumbs up for the emotiva, what would be the better sub, the energy s10.3, lava lsp 10, or the emotiva ultra 12?

most importantly tho, would it matter considering my set up?

From what I'm getting the energy would be more then sufficient and the best value considering all of what I have already and the space it will be filling. Also it seems more versatile between music and movies from what I can gather. I'm a casual user, not an audiophile.

Here is the review of the Emotiva:

http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/s...ofers/ultra-12

Keep in mind that this was written when it was $500 instead of $$329.

Also, try coupon code CL1111. That might work and save you $20.

That was a really good article, my biggest question is the extra $80 worth it with what I have and my situation?

If not would the energy s10.3 or lava lsp10 be the better buy? both at 250

Might get crushed for asking, but can you stretch your budget just a tad? The Lava 12 can be had for $288 shipped (pretty sure that's what I paid for each of mine) with the AVS member discount.

Im willing to go up to $329 for the Emotiva ultra 12. Which seems to be the best sub at that price point. I think I'm answering my own question really now.

Its just a question of is it worth it.

Yes, the Ultra 12 is definitely worth $329. It's actually worth more, so at that price it's a steal.

I agree with Jim Wilson... it's not just worth it, it's a steal for $329.00. If only I don't have two of them, I'd buy some more.
