Hey, just stumbled on SVS website and they have a new feature called "merlin" that helps you select the recommended sub for the speakers you have. Also they also recommend the AVR crossover settings to use.

Just saw this. It recommended the 3 different subs. The cheepest was SB12 NSD. I'm getting close to ordering a SB1000, so I wonder if that will be good enough. What dies the Merlin base its choices on?

Yamaha RX-V1065 receiver
Bowers & Wilkins 685 front speakers
SVS SB-1000 subwoofer
Marantz PMD350U CD/cassette player
Sony BDP-N460 Blu Ray player
Sony Bravia KDL-40V5100 flat screen TV
Wii game console
Roku 2XD internet streaming box

While I love SVS, this looks like a marketing gimmick to me. Just another way to make the uneducated feel like they've made the right choice without any knowledge on what they are choosing, and why; so they can plunk down their money quicker. smile.gif

They've had that for a while. I used it a long time ago and didn't find it partiularly useful...since it's database is so limited smile.gif

We have about 2000 speaker models in Merlin, and the database grows every week. If a customer doesn't see his speaker model in Merlin, we have a short request form they can complete, and we'll quickly add that model to Merlin, and also follow-up with the customer.

When SVS develops a Merlin entry for a given speaker model, naturally we make some educated assumptions about the room size, associated electronics and playback level typically encountered in a system with that speaker model. These assumptions are based on thousands of live interactions with our customers over many years. This data then allows us to develop some SVS subwoofer recommendations which will typically work very well with that loudspeaker model in a wide range of applications.

Of course there will always be outlier applications where a different SVS subwoofer model will work best. The room size and layout, the distance from the listening position to the subwoofer, the typical playback level, and the desired amount of slam/impact/pressure on LFE scenes all come into play when recommending the best SVS subwoofer for a given application.

A quick call, chat or email to SVS CS never hurts to double-check a Merlin subwoofer recommendation. With that said, it's important to realize that some potential buyers can't always contact SVS CS when they viewing our website, and Merlin gives them an opportunity to view some potentially good subwoofer matches for their loudspeakers, and it's a great starting point for a future live interaction with SVS CS.

Why not include room dimensions as well. Just by going by Speaker brand / model isn't correct in my opinion.

When SVS develops a Merlin entry for a given speaker model, we have a very good idea of the room size, associated electronics and playback levels typically encountered in a system using that loudspeaker. This is based on many years of combined CS experience and thousands of live interactions with our customers. We'll then typically recommend a few subwoofer models which will cover a fairly wide range of playback levels and form factor restrictions like size, weight, height and footprint.

Merlin isn't a replacement for a live interaction with SVS Customer Service. It's simply a website tool customers can use to get a good idea of what SVS subwoofers would potentially be a good fit for their system - and this is a valuable resource for customers who are viewing our website outside of normal CS business hours.
