I currently have a home built monstrosity ( 29" x 22" x 18" ) with dual 12" drivers in separate sealed compartments. Fed from a discrete 150W/channel amp so it had plenty of SPL for the room that is large (20x15x8) and opens to an adjacent room and hall. Really, way more than enough SPL for me, but it sounds nice and had only a small bump around 40Hz. Fortunately, it was semi-hidden behind the Pioneer plasma on a stand in a corner.
Now, the room will have a new layout and there will likely be a wall mounted Samsung LED with Def tech XTRs as mains. I plan to re-use my Def tech Procenter 2000 and Boston surrounds. Electronics are old but still useful, I have a decent Marantz 6.1ch surround receiver (100w/ch ish) and an Adcom and Parasound amp on hand if needed.
I'd like to re-use the old sub with one of the amps like before, but I suspect once the room is done there won't be a good place to put it where it won't make the room look bad.
My options are to put a single smaller, nicer looking sub in the front right or rear right corner of the room, or perhaps to put a pair of subs inside each end of a long A/V cabinet that will be under the TV.
Fortunately, I rarely listen to music in this room anymore. It's mainly the kids using the TV there without the home theater system, but I like decent sound and some thump for movies (90%) and music (10%) when I am there. Mostly, it's for show these days, so whatever I buy should look decent and be heard when needed.
In the corner, dimensions are not a huge factor, but should be somewhat smaller than the current one. Conversation piece >> eyesore.
In the cabinet, which will be open-front, each sub would have to fit in an area 15" deep, 20" wide and 24" tall, smaller if it is has to be oriented to be side firing, rather than front or down firing. If it is less than 15" deep and under 15" tall and front firing, that allows me to fit a shelf above it possibly.
Cost should be $599 or so shipped.
I'm thinking I could fit something like a pair of Lava 10" or even the 12" (side firing) is within cost if they still offer an AVS discount. Others that seem to look nice and might fit within the dimensions include a pair of Energy EW-100, Velodyne Impact 10 or something like that. I could also do something like a single SVS SB12-NSD outlet special with the hope of someday adding a friend for it.
For a corner sub outside the cabinet, I can go a bit larger. Wireless would be handy for the rear corner, but isn't necessary. Cadence CSX-12? Epik Legend? Rhythmic FV12? Outlaw LFM1-Plus (or LFM1 EX on a sale maybe)? HSU VTF2-MK4? With these larger boxes, there probably would not be a second sub added in the future.
Whatever it is, I need at least a 30 day return policy in case it just doesn't work or look right with the room/furniture.Does anyone make a decent non-powered passive home subwoofer these days? Seems like a shame to shelve one of my big amps
, but times have changed now that you can stick a relatively tiny class-D amp into a sub box for a very little cost.
Thanks for any input!
