I'm sure you are all correct. But...this is not my ballgame. Just doing some legwork on subwoofers for a friends HT. I will however pass along this info and recommend something else. He did tell me that the front of the cabinet will be material much like a regular flr standing speaker grill. So...if you take off the the grill on the sub...wouldn't you essentially have a similar effect? One could also have a small fan installed to cool down the unit. Just thinkin. It may or may not work. I do know that space is at a premium. There may be no other option (place) for the sub to go. Thanks to all for their good comments. As this is a work in progress...I will insure my friend does the right thing. JC

Not a great place for a sub. Let's not forget that the long wavelength of bass wraps around the front baffle of their cabinets and that's why some of the smoothest ones have minimal real estate there. You friend's subwoofer could potentially emit a much more localized bass response being inside a cabinet.

Is the cabinet near the front where the main left & right speakers are located? That's not always the best location for a sub, just the most commonly seen one. Often times it'll perform better along a side wall or in a corner you wouldn't expect it to do well. Do the "sub crawl" with it before committing.

KEF R500, R200C, R100, SVS SB2000 sub, NAD T758 receiver, Pro-Ject RPM1 TT w/ Sumiko Pearl, Bluesound Vault2, Sony BDP-S480 BlueRay player, Samsung UN55JU6500F 4K LED TV, KEF M500 headphones, Sony CDP-CE500 CD changer.

Watch to see if the BIC PL-200 goes on sale. It's currently a little over your budget on Amazon.ca.

I have one in my secondary system. It's not bad at all, just not going to fill a large room without working really hard. The 150w amp is no powerhouse. If you have a smaller room, say under 15' square with a normal ceiling height, no problem, otherwise look around for more power.

A list like that is almost entirely subjective, so the one you might get from me will most likely differ from what the next person provides. Even if our lists included the exact same 10 subwoofers they would probably be in a different order, relative to our own individual preferences, so it might cause more confusion then it resolves.

You didn't really provide much for people to go on though, so if anyone wanted to suggestion something specific instead it might not prove to be appropriate for the task at hand. You should take a look at this sticky thread to get an idea of what type of info is most helpful.

If you take yourself too seriously, expect me to do the exact opposite

Let me try again. I would like a recommendation for a subwoofer that fits these criteria

Budget - under C$400 - prefer best bang for the buck, so if a $350 sub is better than a $300 or $400 sub, i would get the $350 sub (and not marginally better)
Size - open to up to 12's - if i can hit lower and clean - i would be happy
Room size - 12.5 x 16.5'x 9' (height) - three walls, one side open to kitchen - end of kitchen is 19ft away
Listen to - TV/movies
time - doesnt matter
placement - I'll likely place on the back wall - about 3 feet away from the corner, If i put it in one corner, it will be behind my receiver table, where my house plant is (wife wont let me move it). If i put in the other corner, it will be in between the sofa and loveseat and will likely need a wireless transmitter. If i put it on the otherside, then that area is open to the kitchen

Note: this will be going into my family room for normal listen experiences. I have a basement, where i am putting in larger speakers and 2 subs for awesome movies, sporting events and just enjoying over the weekend

I have currently have in my family room, 4x Def Tech. Pro 800 and a Def. Tech Pro cinema 2000 (center) connected to a Denon 2113CI. My def tech Pro 800 sub is dying and making lots of scratching noises, so it needs to be replaced

Best Buy is running a special on Klipsch, and apparently the R-12SW will be half off. Check their flyers.

If DIY is an option, what about something like this subwoofer kit and this amplifier?

If you take yourself too seriously, expect me to do the exact opposite

At this price, this sub would work well for you.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jamo-J-112-D...8AAOSw4shYB5mk

But like the others said, the BIC PL-200 would also be good choice for your criteria.

Personally I dont have any experience with either of these, but they are normally highly recommended around here.

For a 10-12" for 100% music only in a 2.1 desk setup, could I do any better than the white Jamo J12 (not J112) 12" for $179 at Newegg? I'm not picky on color and my bookshelves are the Elac B5. Room is 13x11x8.

First off, let me say a big Thank You to @Jim & @Mix _Ice for recommending and giving me advice on the RBH I-12. Its exactly what i was looking for. It has the bass thumping chest as well as the low extension (no more port noises).

However i would like to get another sub but i dont want something as larges as the I-12. I currently have the RBH I-12 paired with the Bic F-12 and im looking for a similar sub in performance to the RBH but in the size print of the Bic F-12.
Been looking at the RSl 10s would it give a similar performance to the I-12 ?

Thanks again for all the advice and help

The Speedwoofer 10S looks like a good little sub, but you couldn't expect it to compete with the much larger 12" I-12. Ported subs are usually quite a bit larger than sealed, so the 10S being on the smaller size is one of it's advantages, at least for someone looking for a smaller sized subs. You could always try the 10S for yourself, since RSL has free return shipping if it doesn't work out.

I'd be very tempted to order the new Emotiva S12: http://emotiva.com/products/subwoofers/basx-s12. Looks like it fits your size requirements.

There are no reviews yet. It's just been released. There might be some testimonials at Emotiva Lounge as that's where early adopters of their new products tend to talk about them.

Emotiva has a good reputation with subs in the past. And their speakers of course are very good. I would personally bet on it to perform as described.
