I currently own a PSW505.
Im having issues playing it at loud volumes. When I do so the sub makes a very strange sound, like the cone is moving (like i can hear it physically moving).
Whats wrong? Also what sub would you reccomend as a suitable replacement in case it calls for it? I would like to spend under 500 for a used one.

I'm not really sure about the strange sound you heard. If you heard the rattle from the voice coil, the spider might be damaged.

The BIC America F12, VK12 and PL-200 are excellent budget subs. Most people preferred the PL-200.

I'm not sure but it sounds like you are running too much power and the speaker is bottoming out.
too much movement and passing it's x-max.
sure every body like loud sub sounds with a higher volume, but you can over do it.

At under $300, many individuals in this forum recommend the BIC PL-200.

If you can get a good price, then consider a second 505. The 505 will not play quite as low as the PL-200.

At around $400, individuals like the Hsu STF-2 that is considered a step-up from the PL-200. The Hsu will be much more musical than the PL-200 (you need to read the PL-200 thread for comments from former PL-200 owners who have upgraded to the STF-2).

Check Josh Ricci's excellent reviews at
Ricci also like the Premier Acoustic (~$400) which will play quite loud but has most of its frequency response above 35 Hz.
