I have seen subwoofers with passive radiators described as sealed and other subs with passive radiators described as vented.

In the Passive Radiator FAQ from Acoustic Elegance they make this statement:

"You typically only want to use a passive radiator along with a woofer that is designed for a vented enclosure. A passive radiator enclosure is NOT a sealed box enclosure. You will typically want to use a lower Q woofer with a PR system. This means a woofer with Qts of .4 or lower."

That brings me to my question: Is a subwoofer with a passive radiator more like vented, or more like sealed?

passive radiator subs are "bass reflex" loaded just like a ported box. like a port, the pr's are tuned resonate at a certain frequency just like a port

they also have a steep roll-off below tune like a port

i would say pr's are nothing like sealed

All this noise about noise.

and who was the first person to realize that measurements can tell us a sub sounds good. are we to trust his ears ? maybe he was listening to "the room"

If he's measuring and listening indoors, who cares about his ears, or his measurements? If he's measuring and listening indoors, he's only measuring, and hearing, his room... interesting, but meaningless for the rest of us.

and if the sub was measured outdoors, how do we know if it sounds good indoors ?

people could save a lot of money by just papering their walls with measurements and looking at them during an explosion scene

So all kidding aside, what would you say to someone who describes a subwoofer with a passive radiator as being an "acoustic suspension" design?

I would say they don't know what they are talking about?

To me, passive radiator designs do combine the two best things about each alignment.

1) you get the deep bass boost inherent in a vented design
2) you get the close box of a sealed design (so spiders and toys don't end up nesting in your sub.....both happened to me)
