I am building a little home theater setup in my bedroom which is about 18'x18' large. It is a 5.1 setup - my mains are Energy RC-70, center will be the Energy RC-LCR, rears will be the Energy RC-10's. I am very much into music (have a bunch of FLAC rips, am big into vinyl, and will soon be adding a SACD/DVD-Audio player to my setup just to give you an idea. I also own a pair of AKG K701's with a Heed Canamp headphone amplifier and my PC has an ASUS Xonar sound card which is crystal clear so I take my music quality and listening seriously lol) and I am looking for really deep, solid, non-distorted, fast bass to do my music collection justice.

I also own a nice panasonic 1080p plasma tv and have a PS3, so I am also into high quality blu-ray movies and video games. I would like a sub with a good amount of power but it also very important that it not be muddy or boomy - I love a good sub with good speed to provide good separation between sounds.

So far I have been looking at the Rythmik F12G ( or maybe even just the F12 would do?) to give an example of something I think would probably suit me well. I, however, am not really an expert on subs although I have recently been looking at the specification measurements like 3db ranges and frequencies, but would love for someone with more knowledge than I to chime in. Please recommend a good sub that would suit me well you low pitch experts smile.gif

EDIT: I also have been looking at the VTF-15H sub by HSU, but do you think it would be a little overkill for my setup? Thanks in advance

I'd go for the F12g before I'd get a SB12. The Hsu being overkill depends on how loud you like to listen.

Not knowing the height of your room, I'd guess it's about 2500 sq^ft. That room is what I'd call a small - midsize room for Audio. I used to have a SVS PB12-NSD for a room that exact size and it's was incredibly good. If you don't listen to music all too loud (reference level), a smaller unit like thet SB 12 should work just fine.

Anything from HSU or SVS is great and has been tested and reviewed many times. I'm sure you'd be happy with anyone of them at your desired price range. Just pic what looks best aesthetically to you and price wise/support wise.

Oops, I knew I forgot something. I'd like to stay right under the $1,000 mark. The Rythmik at ~$800 would be perfect, but I would be willing to spend more if the perfect sub is found. My ceiling height is 10'. I don't listen REALLY loud, but every once in a while I do like to be able to crank up my music/movies. I usually listen around reference level though. A lot of my friends say I listen to music too low, but they're usually the "blast the music till the walls shake and pictures are falling off the walls" types.

If you are really listening at reference, than a ported 15" would be more suitable. You might go for the VTF15h or maybe even this new dual ported 15" called the XV30. You might also check out the Epik Empire. Those subs are more appropriate for that loudness level.

I doubt you are usually listening to music at reference if your friends say you are listening at lower volumes than they like. Reference level music is quite loud. How are you calibrating reference?

As to sub choice a Rythmik or a Epik Empire is my recommendation given your specific use criteria.

A uls-15 from hsu might also strike your fancy.

Poor wording by me, I meant I would like it to be crisp and clear at reference level and also lower listening levels i.e. when playing music for just background ambiance

I've also been hearing some really good things about the Seaton Submersive, although it is slightly pricey. What are your guys' opinions on the Submersive in a setup like mine?

Seaton Submersive is fantastic if you can swing the coin.

it is the current reigning champ but it is more than twice your budget as for your budget if you can find a better sub than the HSU VTF-15H for a grand buy it but I seriously doubt anything will beat its price/performance ratio.

Yeah, part of me wants to save up for the submersive, but this is just going to be in my bedroom. Dont think i'd be able to take full advantage of it often enough to drop the extra cash. It is tempting though

other than that, how do the rythmik f12g, hsu vtf-15h, and epik empire compare?

For your use case scenario I really like the Epik Empire.

I thought it sounded fantastic on music at the 2011 subwoofer meet linked in my signature. You can read other's opinions of the Epik empire in that thread. To my ears, it's a bit of a mini budget oriented submersive. At $800 I also think it's a bargain.

I like the Empire too. The only caveat being that there seem to be a number of amp issues with recent Epik subs, and while them seem to stand by their warranty and replace defective amps, it seems that it can take time to get in touch with them and get the replacement shipped out. I have talked to Chad (founder and owner) and he is a really great guy that is clearly passionate about bringing high performing products to the market at affordable prices, but the amp failures are something folks should be aware of.

How do the Epik and VTF-15H compare? Anyone with direct experience with the two?
