The way I see it, the more good subs on the market the better. Would it be my choice for $2,000? Hardly. I would be all over a Captivator or even a Seaton Submersive (for a little more). But, as has been pointed out there is certainly a market for a tiny, high tech sub. The Sunfire has an aluminum cabinet to deal with the high internal pressure. 1.8 inch excursion driver and 1,400 watt (rated) amp.
On the other hand, the Atmos isn't a good match for small speakers that don't go very deep.
Bob Carver has done a lot of clever engineering, including having won a challenge to match the performance of a megabuck Conrad-Johnson tube amp using an amp he cobbled together in a motel room. His amp was constructed in an empty coffee can! Also he pioneered class H amps which are ubiquitous now.
