New to the forum although I have been reading many threads over time. Thought it was time I jumped in for some input from some experienced audiophiles. I recently finished my basement and am looking for a sub to complete a 5.1 surround system. The basement set up is a little more difficult in that the room I have the system in is 14' wide by 21' long but is open along the back into another 16' wide x 20' room. The room where the system is has carpet and the other room laminate. Standard 8' drywall ceilings.

Satellites are Definitive Pro 6000's all the way around with a newer Yamaha RX-V571 receiver. I would really like to stay with a 10" sub if possible for size and I will use more for music than movies so control, clarity, speed and musicality are important. Probably 75% music and 25% HT. I do want some depth though and would like a decent hit for overall bass extention. My budget is to try and stay below $500. I know I am not getting the best sub out for this prie and sacrifices will be made. However, for what I am looking for this is the pricepoint I want to stay under. I only want one sub and not run two and I know many of you probably think I am crazy for going 10" vs. 12" but I would like to keep the cabinet fairly small.

The more I review sub the more I get overwhelmed. Some that I think would work well but have not personally heard on my list:

Definitive Pro 1000 ($275 Refurb)
Definitive Super Cube III ($399 New Currently on Amazon)
Velodyne Impact 10 ($260)
Outlaw LF-1 Compact ($330)
HSU STF-2 ($400)

I am driving myself mad eek.gif researching and just need to pull the trigger. I don't need to rock my house with my wife and little kids so knocking pictures off the wall isn't a priority and I don't want boomy loose bass. Just looking for clean, tight bass that will sound well with music as well as movies but also not break the bank. I appreciate your input in advance and any other subs to consider that would blend well with the satelittes would be helpful. Also, you won't hurt my feelings.. smile.gif

Thanks!

get the Hsu. IMO, it'll have better resale value when you are ready to upgrade... to a bigger Hsu. smile.gif

What a long, strange trip its been....

My opinion...the Outlaw and HSU are front runners. The Velodyne Impact is just not in the same league as the Outlaw or HSU...and I won't state an opinion on the Def Tech choices. Me in your shoes, I'd snag the HSU.

The coupon was for WWStereo, and they are currently out of stock.

And just FYI - According to an email from a Klipsch rep that was posted in the Energy owner's thread, Vann's is currently not an authorized Klipsch (therefore Mirage/Energy/Jamo) dealer due to the Ch 11 bankruptcy issues... So unless Klipsch makes them "authorized" again after the bankruptcy is sorted out, future warranty support could be a problem.

Wow... Looks like a great sub for that price. I like the size of the cabinet too.

Did not know that about the Bky... I am leaning towards an HSU or Outlaw. Seems true audiophiles always keep coming back to these brands. I found a slightly used Outlaw LFM-1 EX on Craiglist today for $350. Looks to be be in mint condition. Any thoughts on that sub or that price?

I would jump on that deal. Find out if it is still under warranty (3 years) as I see no reference that the warranty only applies to the original buyer:

I am checking with the owner to find out if under warranty. My only concern is the size of this sub. I know base don room size this thing will rock at both music and movies.

Based on the volume of your room, you will need something big smile.gif

10" sub for such a huge space? Why bother?

eek.giffrown.gif

Get the outlaw -- it'll still be outclassed by your massive airspace.

I know... I just to face reality that what I want can't happen. If I want clean deep and loud bass, then I need a strong 12" sub like and HSU or Outlaw, Emotiva, etc. What is so irritating is I am finding the more I read about these other quality subs the majority of the general public doesn't even know exist. I feel even even myself like I have been "snowed" all these years by big box retailers and name brands. Seems the subs you buy direct from the company tend to be the best. (Some exceptions of course) Anyway I appreciate the feedback thus far in my thread and reading others in the past. So thanks!! Question on the Outlaw/HSU subs. I will be using more for musics vs. movies but all is important. How is the "musicality" and "speed" of the HSU/Outlaws? I don't see a lot of feedback on those topics when looking at these. Just curious. Yes, you are probably right, even this Outlaw LFM-1 EX will probably be outlclassed by my airspace, but it is plenty for me currently and coming from prior Polk Subs and a Definitive 8" Pro 6000 I am sure this sub would seem like heaven... smile.gif

I guess another thought would be to go to two smaller but identical subs and place them opposite sides of the room for better imaging/bass. Not sure if that is even a road I should go down or not...

You have. We all went through that, but wait until you hear an Outlaw EX biggrin.gif

If you don't get the used EX, get it on sale for $600 shipped right now from Outlaw. I have one. They are great sounding subs for the price smile.gif
