Hi all,

I am building a home theater in my basement (open concept, 17' wide x 27' deep x 7'-8' height).
I would watch movies 80% and TV programs 20% most of the time. I am planning to put a 120" fixed screen in the corner or 17' wall with a 7.1 speaker system.
Following speakers are suggested by the sales man from a AV store...

PSB Image T5 for L/R;
PSB Image C5 for Center;
PSB Sub 5i for the subwoofer;
Two pairs of Yamaha NSIC600 in-ceiling for the side and the rear.

I have to go with in-ceiling speakers for the side and rear due to the open concept basement.

I am little concerned about the PSB subwoofer recommended by the store sales, I searched online which is a rather old product by PSB.

Could you please suggest if the PSB speakers listed above are good enough for the size of my room, and please also suggest a better subwoofer (from $500 to $900?) to best pair up the speakers?

Please advise.
Thanks.

Do not get the PSB sub, that is a pretty bad value for a ported 150 watt 10" sub. The subs to look at in your budget range are the Power Sound XV15, Hsu VTF3, Craigsub SS-18.1 with the Dayton amp, or Epik Empire. Swing $100 more and you can also get a Hsu VTF15h. Any of those will crush the PSB sub. As for the PSB speakers, those ought to work well, but I don't think they are going to be reference level speakers- in other words, you can't really crank them hard, although they will no doubt get loud. For speakers you can really push to THX reference levels, I would be looking at Klipsch Reference series speakers or some of the speakers from Chase Home Theater.
