I received this email recently. I never created an account for dwolla, I assume Ben Milne is using all of the contact emails from customers of eD to try to grow his dwolla company. The email reeks of a scam attempt (I have no friend named Erica, well actually I do but it's spelled with a K) and seems like the company is getting pretty desperate. I received another email similar to this one the next day. Below is the first email:

"Howdy,
Your friend Erica used TryDwolla.com to send you money.
If you have never created a Dwolla account, you will receive a separate email with the steps to claim your money on Dwolla, a new payment network. If you're an existing Dwolla user, you will receive the standard email and text notifications that you've received money.
As a promotion, one out of every 100 people that receive money on TryDwolla.com will be rewarded with $50.
You can only receive money once on TryDwolla.com, but we encourage you to send a #moneybomb to all of your friends.
#MoneyBomb"

Uh, yeah... I really want to create an account and use a payment method that was founded by a former owner of a company that has ripped off countless numbers of customers. Anywone else getting these emails from dwolla?

When you get spam of this sort from what seems to be a familiar source chances are that sources email account has been hacked. If you open an attachment or view anything other than text in the email chances are your email account will then be hacked as well. In this case 'the steps to claim your money on Dwolla' will undoubtably be a phishing attempt to get personal information from you, with potentially disastrous results if you give them any information whatsoever. As for 'As a promotion, one out of every 100 people that receive money on TryDwolla.com will be rewarded with $50' that's bait; don't bite.

yea, usually...

in this case though, they are from a real source, and that would be the infamous ben milne himself... dwolla is his latest brainstorm...

Well it could be phishing or it could have been sourced and sent from Dwolla. I would contact Dwolla and ask is they sent this, and if so, how they received your contact information.

Maybe, maybe not. I get phishing emails all the time from what claim to be legitimate banks, and a look at the source ISP of course always reveals them to be phony. But it this case either way the source is probably a crook.

FYI - they just raised $16.5MM from some well known VC's. Must be doing something right...

They have Austin Kutcher backing them too.

I think Dwolla is an interesting concept. I just don't buy that they can make that much money based on their fees, and I don't see the traditional credit card companies letting this happen without a big fight. If anything I could see the credit card companies making Milne an offer he can't refuse and then shutting down Dwolla, or upping all the fees and just leveraging some of their IP.
