I Have a big open room (20x20x10) prewired for in ceiling 5.1 and only prewired for one sub in the front left of the room.. it wouldn't be covered in any way. I imagine it will just sit on the floor in the corner of the room.

I would appreciate any recommendation to complete my 5.1... My 5 speakers are the Klipsch CDT-5800-C... I am looking at HTD.com for other speakers throughout the house...their best woofer looks like this one: http://www.htd.com/Products/powered-subwoofers/Level-THREE-Powered-Subwoofer

Would that be a good one for my room? What do you guys recommend? Anything in $300-$1000 range. Thanks!

Saw someone recommend a XV15... is that the consensus woofer of choice for under $1000?

I dont know much about woofers but 92 pounds and 2 feet tall and deep seems huge!

IMO, a sub with a 12" driver and a 170W RMS amp isn't enough for a 4,000 cu.ft. room.

Are you looking for the best "bang" for your buck? You looking for one sub or would you be ok with multiples?

Ever consider building your own? It's so addicting and rewarding!

For under $1K we could slap something together that would rival the likes of some of the best commercial offerings available!

However, if you just want something that's plug and play, the best I can recommend in that price range is rhe Epik Empire. Just check their thread to see if they resolved the amp issues they were having earlier in the year.

Would i need a new receiver to support any of those woofers? I have an Onkyo TX-SR606.

Oh yeah, here is another suggestion.

Since you already have Klipsch, you could just scoop up the RW-12d at newegg for $299 ahipped! There is an entire AVS Thread dedicated to this deal. It's going to be hard to beat.

Your AVR has a subwoofer output, so you're good to go.

You are good. The .1 in 7.1 indicates that this reciever has a dedicated LFE channel. That is all you will need to ensure your sub receives a signal. Regardless of if you were to go with any of the aforementioned products or even if you were to venture into the DIY world.

Ok, was wondering if the TX-SR606 had enough output to support the high wattage woofers.

I saw the Klipsch RW-12D on Newegg...saw some people say it may not be good for my large room but i do like the price. Anyhow, looked like it was sold out also.

Your AVR sends a signal only.

So you run a RCA cable to your sub amp and the amp itself feeds the sub the power it needs based on the signal recieved from the AVR.

The Klippsch wil be back in stock on 11/29 (ETA). You can try one but with your room size you'll probably need two. Two will take care of the large room problem. Personally I'd go for the XV15.
Big and heavy but the better subs are. You located around Tucson?

The sub amp...is this something that is built into the sub box (say the XV15), or is this more equipment i need to buy?

Subwoofers can either be active (or (self-)powered) or passive.

Passive subs consist of one or more drivers in a cabinet, powered by an outboard subwoofer (or other) amplifier. The sub you mentioned in your original post is a passive sub that comes with an outboard amp.

Active subs have built-in plate amplifiers. The subs I and others have suggested to you are active / powered subs.

In either case, your receiver never drives the sub the way it drives your speakers. It just sends a signal to the subwoofer's amp (either the outboard amp or the plate amp), and that amplifier drives the sub itself.

Besides the sub the only thing you need is a subwoofer cable. They are cheap.

I used to live in Chandler off and on over the years. Last time was in 1999 for a year. I went to high school in Avondale. Long long time ago.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I sent a note off to Power Sound to see if they'd have discounts this weekend, but no dice. Even at full price, Sounds like the XV15 is the way to go.

That's cable tv coax but it can be used, it's (mostly) the same as audio coax. You need to solder on RCA heads, and it will mate from the sub out on your receiver to the jack on the back of your sub. IF you can find the opposite end, somewhere in your room and not ran outside.

Honestly it'd be easier to buy a coax from monoprice though.

Yeah, this coax goes from corner of the room (for sub) to the middle where the rest of the 5.1 speaker wires (for receiver) come out of the wall...so i will pick up 2 rca wall plates and 2 rca cables and hopefully it works ok
