No guarantee that would be the same for someone in another situation. Not saying I don't think it's possible. Just that the proof is not there, as you claim.

Been done:

FWIW, here's mine, with two caveats: 1. the bump on the far left is from my new ButtKicker (highly recommended, BTW) and 2. I also have another sub, an old HKTS14.

Okay, three: 3. I, like BeeMan, have spent many (way too many) hours with calibration software and, like BeeMan, have gotten these results without room treatments (Ideally, you treat the room first, then make up for the deficiencies with software. People who do that are generally not married).

They are set to small.

YPAO is kind of weird here...when I run it, it sets them to large, and I have to go to the manual setting to change them to small. How do I know if the AVR is using the manual setting, or the YPAO setting?

Its not fair to clog up this thread because you dont know how to use your receiver. Read the manual and then post in the proper thread.

No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!

I don't know why you are sharing that with me. That's old news. I'm just objecting to Beeman's statement as definitive because of his graph, especially the one note wonder comment.

Hopefully, the splitter is to go to another sub.

And then another sub.

And then....

Connecting the Y splitter to Left / Right input and the RCA cable to the Y splitter to the AVR.

Some have done the same, and I just wanted to try it out.

It doubles the signal strength from the avr and will encourage the rw to come on at a lower volume. Increases volume by 3 dB. Other than that it will make no difference.

Thanks for the explanation. I was told about that so I decided to do it. It only cost me about $15 dollars to buy all the cables from monoprice.com.

I don't at this point, was looking at the OmniMic, but that's $300, already spent too much on the HT, so I'll wait a few months until I pay some of the debt down.

I'm replacing an old Onkyo HTIB (HT-S780) that served me well for many years. So far I've replaced the receiver, fronts, center, and now waiting on the subs from Newegg.

Can I use the mic that came with Audyssey with the receiver? Can I use Cool Edit or Audacity to measure?

Definitely. At least run Audyssey as soon as you get the subs. It is best to properly place the subs first. I suggest the subcrawl to do as good a job of placing them as you can for now and then run Audyssey.

The least expensive entry point, is a freeware copy of REW and a USB measuring microphone. Entry point <$100.00.

I have no idea if the Audyssey supplied microphone can be used for room measuring purposes and I don't know anything about "Cool Edit" or "Audacity."

Depending, some sound meter microphones can be used. Check to see if your sound meter has an audio out feature.

If he is asking about using the Audyssey mic in place of the Omnimic the answer is No.
I have no idea what Cool Edit or Audacity are either.

Cool Edit is the original Adobe Soundbooth (before Adobe acquired Syntrillium many years ago), Audacity is an open-source app for sound editing, see here.

The Audyssey microphone as a single wire with a regular mono jack that connects to the mic input in the receiver.

Can you point me to a tutorial on how to do take sound measurements? e.g. placement of the test-speaker, placement of the mic, proper procedure in terms of frequencies, volumes, etc...

I would like to measure the current Onkyo sub and my new 12D's and compare.

Thanks guys!

Newegg claims $999. Don't think it matters much anymore as the sale price has been $280-350.
