Looking for some ideas on improving the bass in this room. The room itself is 13'x16'x20' and also opens to a loft, dining room, and upstairs hallway so I've got lots of air. All windows have shutters. I'm trying to avoid becoming an audiophile so I don't need sonic perfection. Just looking for more feeling from the bass and some visceral chest thumping goodness. The only listening area to optimize for is the recliner shown. Current sub is a REL R-505 (500W RMS). My placement options are on that wall and on the wall underneath the stairs. I need to stay around 20" depth for that front wall and don't want to block the in-wall speakers. For under the stairs, I could do around 24" depth so side firing might be good if I need a large one. My receiver is an Integra DTR40.4 and has two subwoofer outputs. I'd like the sub to be somewhat attractive and fit into the room, but that's flexible. Looking to spend $1500-2500 including everything. I don't have any gear to do sound measurements, although I could perhaps borrow something as I know placement is key here.

Thanks.

Based on you above specs, I'd go with a pair of Hsu, ULS-15's.

I'd also consider investing in a DSPeaker, Anti-Mode, 8033S II, to help balance the two subs to the room acoustics. No matter if you get black or Rosenut, the total delivered outlay for the pair of subs would be under $2,500.00. The Anti-Mode, 8033S II would add an additional $450.00.

I purchased the Anti-Mode from Creative Sound Solutions.

I would go with a ported subwoofer based on your room. Or two smile.gif

But your depth requirement is a tough one for the front wall.

Maybe start with one of these and potentially add a second:

Or a pair of these:

Another option is the cylinder subs from SVS possibly:

You have a nice budget, and you are going to need it because that is a very large space. The good news is you only have to worry about one listening position, and that makes matters simple. The subwoofers I would consider in your criteria are the aforementioned Hsu ULS-15 pair, a pair of Rythmik F15HP, or one of the subs from Seaton Sound. You have a nice open space right next to your reclining chair, and one thing you can do to get a nice punchy feeling is near-field placement, which is placing a sub very close to your listening position like an endtable in your situation. You might be able to save some money and get a decent sub for that placement, one I can recommend for that role is the Hsu VTF3 mk4. Place it so that side-firing woofer is blasting right into your seat, and you may get what you are looking for and save some money at the same time.
