I've got 2 Velodyne F-1800Rs from around 1995-96 that are getting a bit long in the tooth and are in need of replacements. One has died completely - have had it in the local shop 3-4 times and they just can't get it working - it works fine until it warms up, then it will keep cycling the power off/on. The other will hum every once in awhile, turning the volume knob up or down seems to stop the humming, but it always returns. I think it may be on it's last legs, too.
I just ordered a new receiver (Denon 2113ci, first in about 7-8 years) and now have the "Home Theater Upgrade Fever"!
My speakers are:
Mains: Klipschorns (will probably be my mains for the rest of my life
Center: Klipsch, dunno the model off the top of my head, but it's BIG. "6 or 8" drivers with a horn in the middle. Also purchased around 1995
Surrounds: 4 Polk Audio dipoles (also from '95 or so)
My room is LARGE, about 18'x24' but is also open to the kitchen, about another 15'x12'. Then there's the hallway....yeah, it's a big space to fill with bass.
Is it even worth my time to try and fix my ancient Velos? Do the subs from this millenium sound that much better (I'm assuming they do)?
My plan is to buy one new sub for now, mate it with my one remaining working Velo, then buy another (of the same) in 6 months to a year.
Budget (for the single sub) is anywhere from $1K - $1.5K, but would like to keep it under $1K - cheaper is always better for the WAF.
Looking forward to your recommendations!
