What would be the negative effect of placing the ULD 18 on carpet?

None. What is your concern and why the carpet other than isolating the sub from the floor?

Man, that's an old, but very nice sub. I have a ULD12 in my living room (where I listen to music), bought it new
some years ago. It's still going strong. Sub firing into carpet, even if it is thick is not an issue.

Thanks Vardo. Never thought of the down firing aspect.

Judging by your prior post, that's very evident biggrin.gif
I'm just working on my post count, even if my replies are redundant...

While placing the ULD on carpet will be different than placing it on a hard surface floor, you can not necessarily state that doing so would be negative. Each situation is different, experimentation yields the best results every time.

When in comes to audio there are seldom right and wrong answers.  The opinions of "experts" are just that, and should be used as a suggestion only.  Remember at the end of the day it is your money, your system, and you will need to listen to it.
