Can the OP give a little more guidance on what they mean by "budget" and what size room they have?
If they are looking at two subs at around the list price of an MFW circa '08, then PSA's XV15
, or for less money SVS's PB1000's
would be a thought. The PSA will win the output game (by a lot), and Tom V. is the "V" from SVS, (but the company itself is still rather new) a pair, shipped, comes in around $1,600. The SVS PB1000's come from a company with a rock solid reputation, and costs ~$1,000 shipped for a pair. Both subs have a rather comprehensive 5 year warranty program, and are backed up with solid customer service. Neither are as pretty as a wood veneer MFW (as long as that veneer isn't cracking/splitting, etc).
Larger, more capable, and more costly, subs exist from both companies.
***Side note, as a former MFW owner, who at least lived within driving distance of AV123 when they still existed, I remember the frustration that the subs caused, including several 150 mile round trip drives to drop off/swap/pick up replacements. That memory is one that spurred me on to brands I felt did a better job with backing up their products. In my case it was going back to SVS for subs. While other companies products may have more bang for the buck, and may very well be great companies, I have developed a bit of a risk adverse nature. Hence, solid warranties and customer service, mixed with good reports of reliability have kind of swamped raw spl/$ for me. These concerns do affect my recommendations, so take them with a grain of salt as other peoples desires and motivations may not match my own. Many other companies exist that may/do have solid products, such as Hsu, Rythmik, Seaton in the sub world, and the OP would be well served looking into those brands as well.
