Without knowing your room size or budget it's going to be difficult for anyone to really help, but I'll give it a shot...
If your sub is 5 years or more old, and it's not a real expensive unit to begin with, then it's generally not worth repairing IMHO. You're often throwing good money after bad. If you aren't enthused with modifying the cabinet to try and fit a different amp then perhaps that option should be off the table as well. That would leave you with buying a new unit, if you consider my logic valid. The F12 you mentioned is not the cleanest or most articulate subwoofer on the planet, but for less than $200 it shouldn't be expected either. For HT in a small to medium sized room it can hold it's own though, so it might be worth considering.
If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite
