Not Toole as much as his Harman co-worker Todd Welti, whose research concentrated on placing multiple subs for greatest seat to seat consistency. By comparison, Earl Geddes concentrated on using multiple subs to improve low frequency response at the main listening position.

Welti:
Subwoofers: Optimum Number and Locations

Geddes:
Why multiple subwoofers in sound reproduction?

This can help counteract a room null (you put a signal source in the null, or one that is phased to counter the null). It may take a close sub with a decent amount of power, natch. I believe books/papers by Toole and Geddes discuss use of multiple subs (not sure, somebody will know). And, of course, the additional signal sources must all be carefully aligned so they do not cancel each other, as was previously mentioned.

That assumes you have more than one sub. if you have one sub, all adjusting the phase does is shift the null in the time domain. Although since it's a null, you wouldn't notice.

The answer was in response to a question about two subs. Good point, however. The only caveat I would add is that if the (single) sub is not in phase with the signal (sound) from the mains at the listening position at the crossover frequency then you will get cancellation and could end up with less bass than without a sub at that frequency. Unless the crossover frequency is a null frequency... smile.gif
