^^ Very nice. It is not about look in my case. She does not understand why a second sub is needed/wanted. If I have my volume past -17db with sub 3dbs hot, it is TOO loud ;therefore, no need for a second one mad.gif

Mope around. Whine a lot. Talk incessantly how a second sub will make the first sub sound so much better. At dinner, scoot your peas into the shape of a subwoofer and show your wife. Whine some more. It's unmanly but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. tongue.gif

I was lucky in that my wife understands how important this is but I do talk a lot about it and pretty much, she knows that we have to share the space and I do the same for her. I just recently added a third sub. May have to stop at three or she'll start whining, and crying and writing letters to Dr. Phil. Quid pro quo. And her doing so does not look good with the in-laws.

If we were smart and as self-orientated as many of our partners we'd just make them absolutely miserable until they simply caved out of pure and utter hopelessness.

Wait, did I say that out loud?

James

Actual phone call (see pic to left):

Tech (responding to laughter): "I'm sorry sir, did I miss something?"

Me: "Yeah, a case of Diet Mountain Dew walking across my living room."

It's about finances. If we can afford it and I mean pay cash then it's not a big deal. We both enjoy our dual 15Hs though I enjoy more as a hobby than my wife.

P.s it would be the same if I felt we needed more

Yeah, he's probably single. My wife works and makes just as much as I do. At the same time I don't go into her office and tell her that she needs a smaller desk.

Lately my wife has agreed to my electronic purchases just as long as she gets to buy something of the equivalent price. I buy a sub, she buys furniture. I buy speakers, she buys a purse and some other stuff. Not the cheapest route but It gets the job done. You looking for that second FV15HP?

big diamonds and a great big eek.gif

My system is a bit extravagant for our income but not too absurd; I work hard and want it. She enjoys it too but would be happy with less. Like walke108 everything costs double, whatever I spend on gear we match on house and/or her stuff. My subs+avr came with a new sofa, equipment cabinet for pure cosmetic purposes, puter desk also purely for cosmetics, and patio furniture. It's my hobby so you know the whole supportive without going overboard thing. You should see her face when she gets home and I took off early and I have all the measurement gear out, too funny.

She's kewl with it and the married folks I know from AVS seem to also have understanding wives. Happy wife happy life.

Send a message via Skype™ to popalock
Thread title definitely caught my attention. I'm looking forward to adding some major contributions to this thread and sharing the tips and tricks I've learned over the past few years to get where I currently am from a subwoofe perspective.

I must say, it has been (and still is) an uphill battle...

I just buy what I want. I don't go quite as crazy as Popalock, but I do have a decent sub system in my HT room. Three 18"s and a couple of 12's.
That is a 9' wide curved screen with the three 18's under it. Two of the 18's are in 40" wide boxes and the middle box is 48" wide. In the family room set up, I only have a couple of subs, one 18" and one 12". This is my hobby and what I do for a living, so I can do pretty much what I want. smile.gif Have a new amp that should arrive this week. smile.gif

I blew the driver in my sub recently and my partner said she'd pay for a new one. cool.gif Her comment was 'well I listen to it as well'. She's a keeper smile.gif , especially when I said that I'd like to upgrade to a bigger sub (15" up from 12") and she didn't even question it, in fact she commented that the old one was obviously struggling. smile.gif

I only have 2 subs but I have 2 tower speakers and the whole 7.2 setup with a 60" plasma.... How I did it with my wife was I told her what I wanted and how much MSRP for each thing was and when something went on sale; I told her the sale price and also the MSRP and if she said ok you can get it then I did. It worked, but it took me 2 years to get the setup I wanted. I made a list of all my gear with the MSRP and the price I paid and show her and other ppl how great of a bargain shopper I am. My gear MSRP's for about $8,500 and I actually paid about $4,700 for it.

Great thread as WAF is real factor. I am married with 3 little ones. There is no way I could have what I do in the living room as the little boy would destroy everything. The First step was to build a separate room so I can play movies loud. This also depends on what type of wife you have. Mine loves to tell me how to do everything and what I need and don't need. The answer to this type is to ask for forgiveness rather than permission because you will never ever get an OK from this type, ever! Honey, can I have a movie night, not tonight honey. So this goes on for months and guess what, no movie night ever. So I turned it into Honey, the guys are coming over tonight for a movie. She replies with the why didn't you ask me or let me know! Trust me guys, they get over it in 10 minutes. Same thing for any home theater gear! Now only do this if you can afford it. I never ask the wife for anything anymore, I never get it. Just get it and then wait for the first 10-15 minutes of yelling and insults and then it goes away. You can't explain it because they don't really care. Honey, you never ask me to go anywhere or when you buy something. The reply is usually but I buy what we need which is not true but she really believes it to be. You can't win, just do it! Again, only if you can afford it. I am not saying put JBL pro 4675C speakers in the living room either. We have to be somewhat reasonable too. If I can get away with things you guys can too.
salehdidit and lewdogg like this.

I have a similar situation except it's not really an agreement. It just happens that way. Also, it's rarely equivalent.

If we could get a contractor out to the house to replace the kitchen sink, they'd want five hundred dollars. As a retired contractor, I'll do it myself and say, see honey, I saved us money by doing it ourselves. I also have a hall bath that needs attention. The auto detailers want a hundred and eighty to two hundred and sixty dollars to wash, polish and clean the interior of my wife's car and this needs to be done at least twice a year. Yep, guess what, the old man went out and bought a bucket and some polish and now details the wife's car. frown.gif But as you suggest, show her "REAL" savings and it becomes that much harder to say no.

I just finished upgrading our subwoofer system on the cheap. A couple of years from now, I will go the Full Monte but first, there's the hall bath and a few other items around the house and then dad gets to buy three Big Dog subwoofers that go: "WOOF! WOOF!"

In my case, it is not about finance or saving as I can afford a sub or two, it is about 'need', 'want' and she always says 'you dont need this or that, blah blah blah, it is already TOO loud' but then she thinks she needs 100 pairs of shoes, 20 plus brand name purses that cost $1000 each or more eek.gif
