Short story, i had 2 Epik Empires, now i have 1, sold the one to get a PSA XS-30, got that today, and its great, but i need more output in the lower bass regions, so i was looking at getting either a JTR Captivator 1000, a Submersive HP, a SVS PB13Ultra, or dual Rythmik FV15HP, any comment's will be appreciated? THANKS:D

Well like you mentioned in the other thread, personally if you're looking at the FV15HP I honestly can't see why you'd want the PB13Ultra. And I'm simply basing that comment of the price/performance of the two. You would only gain about 1dB down low going with a PB13Ultra yet you have a pay quite a bit more to get that 1dB.

I just put the PB13Ultra in there, i still cant wrap my head around the price difference between the 2, i still cant find any specks on the JTR Captivator 1000.

So I'm going to take a guess that you're looking for max output below 30hz right? because above 30hz the XS30 won't have any problems keeping up with a FV15HP. So what's your budget? and are you looking for two subs within that budget or just one really good one?

And is this mostly for movie use, or music? or 50/50?

You should talk to Tom about return the XS30 for a XV30. It will have a lot more of the low end output you're looking for and is very close to the FV15HP for overall output.

Yes it does. So basically you'd need two XS30 to equal the XV30 down low.

IMO JTR and Seaton subs are on another level then most other ID subs. But its going to cost you quite a bit more to buy one. But if you were going to buy a Captivator I don't think I'd take a 1000, I would say go with the 2400 otherwise just get a XV30. I would think around it's port tune the XV30 would have some what similar numbers to a Captivator 1000.

I think the Captivator 2400 has a 3dB output advantage over the 1000 version.

I believe I found a ground plane measurement for the Captivator 2400, but I'm pretty sure its @ 1m. Jeff posted that it hit 127dB at 20hz, so if that was at 1m it would hit 121dB @ 2m which a very impressive number. So a Captivator 1000 would be capable of 118dB @ 20hz if I'm reading that right eek.gif

For $2100, get the passive Cap 2400, Behringer Inuke DSP 3000 Amp and you can forget about other subs. Nothing can come close (beside DIY) to its output/performance for the price. Are you not happy with the XS30?

I really just want a sub that can play at reference level with no problem, even though i never listen that loud, but i just want the head room, so i dont have to worrie about the sub distorting.

Should be faily easy to set them up. Give Jeff a call as depends on what amp or amp connection you get, he will need to build the sub for that. If you feel the need for a second Cap, you only need to buy another passive cap as the Behringer amp can drive both subs. So the XS30 is not better than the Empire? Have you tried a different sub locattion?

Talked to Jeff, he said that the Cap 2400 would do about 120db at 20hz in my room., and he also stated to get the amp that comes with the cap, as it is made for it, and is more efficiant.

So that's with room gain. I wonder what the 2m ground plane numbers would be at 20hz for it.

^^ If you can afford $2500 plus shipping ($200?), of course. Many here use passive Cap plus Behringer or Crown amp with great success.

I just noticed that you only had your XS30 for a couple day. Not sure about PSA but Rythmik sub sounds better after fully broken in. You might want to have it broken in for 15-20 hrs and play with sub location before spending money to return it.

I agree with this. Before you go off and spend another $1500-2500, take the time to figure out the room. I would look into buying either a Dayton Omnimic or get a sub $100 USB mic and use with with REW that is free. This would allow you to really measure your room and try placement. It could be your sitting in a null. Also, have you tried EQ?

I completely agree with ack_bk. I just sold my svs pc13 and replaced it with dual xs30's. I received them 1 week ago and I have tried multiple placement scenarios. I have been using REW with each change so I can see what I'm hearing.

My first placement, I was not getting the low end response (REW comfirmed this) as I had a very wide null sucking everything from 15 to 25hz. 2 days later I used REW while moving one of my subs all around the room, running sweeps in every location. I have found many trade offs with each placement, and so far not one is "perfect".

I'm currently running 1 nearfield directly behind my seats and the other behind my front right speaker. This placement scenario gives me the same low end response as the pc13 (which was great), but I now also have much better upper base. It also feels as if the bass is "fuller" in the room - dual subs...

I'm not done trying placement scenarios. I'm still hoping to move them yet again and give it another day or 2 while testing out other placement scenarios. I'm hoping to try running both up front near the front speakers. They measure flatter up up front, but I have no room for them (would have to replace my fronts to bookshelfs and use the subs at stands..).

I guess my point is, invest in REW and time (maybe another xs30...), before giving it up. I know that mine are not 100% dialed in, but they will be. I have no regrets with the xs30's.
